Portable AC for Gen 3

Wondering if anyone has experience with a portable AC unit that can run off a generator while you are camping in the back of your rig or sleeping in a tent.? I just purchased a Honda EU 2200 and would like something that can run off of that size generator. It gets mighty hot down here in South Florida. Thanks for any recommendations.

last year 4th of July weekend at jackson lake, Co a guy had a window airconditioner hooked up to a tent and he was running the generator from 10 in the morning to 10 at night and drove everyone nuts. it was terrible. so I think it can be done but really annoying. This year they added a rule if you don't have an electric site you cannot have airconditioner in camping sites.

There aren't a lot of choices for hot-weather camping. I prefer to hammock camp so the breeze and open tarp setup help keep me cool. For my kids in the tent I've brought a small box fan but that's only at sites with power. For the no-electric locations I got a small jumpstarter box along with the small DC fans like you'd put in a vehicle. It was easily able to run all night without discharging the battery.

Trying to actually air condition a tent in hot conditions is going to be like cooling your house with the front door and half the windows wide open. The unit will run basically nonstop and at best serve as a fan. It will be less-miserable.

Best bet...camp when it's cooler.

FYI....those portable units that move the heat away via a bendable hose are about half again less efficient than their typical "window shaker" cousins. They typically pull a portion of the conditioned room air across the condenser to move the heat out of the hose. This means less cool air for you.

I know Flo rida it's hot muggy all the time, it's not camping if you bring A/C with you. Wear as little clothing as possible.

Lol, it's funny how often I get made fun of for using this! I work in the oilfield in Texas and northern Louisiana. As anyone knows...we see triple digit heat on the regular during the summer. I got sick of having to fill my fuel tank every other day after idling on location for 12 hours straight. Not to mention, the added wear and tear on my engine and S/C. I went to Wal-Mart and spent around $150 on the GE unit with a remote control. It works awesome, and paid for itself after the first week and a half of not having to constantly refuel with premium!

Fret not about the noise with that generator, they are whisper quiet. I used some cardboard to help insulate the sides, but have since started using a cut up pool noodle to insulate the sides and top, and a smaller piece to run along the bottom. Make sure your door has been waxed, or redirect the drain hole to the back of the unit so it doesn't drip down your door.

Side note: NO...this does not always ride in that spot! I only move it to the window when I get to location. At the end of the day, I return it to the cargo area.

Interesting. I was thinking about a window shaker, and I have also seen some rigged up to tents. I knew I couldn’t be the only one.. as far as the funny comments, I have a sense of humor so carry on. Seems like most people that commented have not visited Florida in the summer.

My Grandparents retired to Ft. Lauderdale in 1966, visited them for a week once a year for 20 years. I only camped once in FL, it was June, me & my Sister camped outside Orlando for 3 day's while visiting Disneyworld. I dont remember the heat bothering us as we were very young but the sand gnat's were so small they were able to get into the tent. They sucked!

Camping portable air conditioners can be operated by generators. As long as you have a generator, everything becomes easy. I have an LG portable with auto-evaporation function, and use it on the RV, powered by a generator. It becomes indispensable every hot summer.

Coming from a backpacking background, I already thing most of yalls camping set up are beyond luxurious. But AC? That's just insane. If it's that hot, hammock camp. A decent hammock tent is about the same price as an AC unit.

Camping is about enjoying life in the outdoors, not figuring out a way to bring your entire house with you on vacation.

You’ll need a really small unit to power it with a Honda 2200. You’ll tear up the pump in the unit starving it for starting voltage/current.
Most AC units need a 3000+ watt generator to operate.
If you get a small unit you might get away with just some starting capacitors.
