I have the 7336SP model that you can get from Lowes. I bought it for $109. It doesn't come with the velcro backing plate though. You can get the velcro backing plate from a lot of sources.

Here's a link to a kit that's good for detailing. It's the 7424 model. The kit includes the 6" counterweight to help balance out the vibration from using a 6" pad and a 5" counterweight. It also has the velcro backing plate (also known as hood and loop). It's only $119.
Coastal Tools PC Special

I use my PC to polish out the paint to get the swirls out. Other than that, it stays in the box for the most part.

I think it makes a pretty big difference in the fact that it helps lay down a more even coat of wax and deffinately helps knock down swirl marks. I use mine about every two months, at least to apply wax. If I am doing the entire Griot's detailing, I am in it for at least two days. That is wasking, clay, polish wax, rotating the tires (polishing the rims inside & out) then detailing the interior. some people like to garden.....i like detailing.

Back to your original question, yes it is a good investment (in my opinion).

Another thing that makes a difference is the micro fiber cloths from Griot's. I had been using the 100% cotton cloths for several years and thought they were the best until one of the sales people talked me into trying the micro fiber.......i am completely sold on those. I also bought the micro fiber wax remover bonnet for the PC. I was amazed at how well it took the wax off. Of course the bad think is the cost of all these things, but if you can suggest some of these to some people, they would make dandy Christmas presents.:D

Thanks a lot!!! just got back from lowe's with my porter cable polisher:D just one more question, is this what i need to use to to apply wax? how does it attach to the polisher? what do i need next?
thanks again!!

It should attach with hook and loop(velcro). i bought mine through Griot's Garage, so it already had the prickly part on the PC and the pads have the other part on the back of them. If you plan on using some of their polish and their wax, you should get the different color pads.

Once you get to use it, you are going to love it.:D

Thanks again!! ordered the velcro backing plate and clay bar holder and polishing pads :D ....now i just have to wait til it gets here!
appreciate the help. thanks!
