Possible bad front bearing hub assembly?

2005 4Runner limited 126,000 miles. Noticed a growl/rumble noise on the drivers side that could be heard and felt at low speed (20 mph). Not a constant full wheel rotation sound, but rut...rut...rut. Can make the problem worse by swerving the vehicle back and forth at slow speed. I'm thinking a bad front hub assembly? I've replaced several of these on Chevy Blazers , so if my diagnosis is correct, are these just as easy on the 4Runners?

if you buy the part from [MENTION=100129]nj636[/MENTION] ( http://www.toyota-4runner.org/sale-t4r-items/151359-complete-front-wheel-bearing-assemblies-4th-gen-nj-$169.html ) its bolt on and is quite easy and self explanatory.

if you want to be absolutely sure of the side, jack up one wheel at a time, hold on to the lower portion of the shock, and rotate the tire. if you feel vibration or grinding in the shock, its bad, if its smooth and you feel nothing, its good. i could easily tell when mine went bad between the good one and the bad one

As Alex has explained it sounds like a bad wheel bearing. My assemblies are 100% bolt on and take about one hour to swap each side. All of the information needed is on the page he linked. Hope I can help :cheers:

Checked that bearing today..... surprized the front wheel assembly just didn't fall clean off! Jacked it up to check for roughness, I could rock the whole wheel assembly. When that bearing went.... it went fast!

wow that is pretty bad! glad you caught it in time.
 
You are lucky you caught it. A complete bearing failure is not a pretty sight. They don't usually give much more of an indication than what you described. Had you continued on driving it, your wheel would have likely separated from your 4runner.
 
Yeah, saw a girl a couple years ago who drove it 'till the wheel fell off (not a 4runner). Wheel was a ways down the road & hub (what was left of it) on the car was on fire (grease).
