Possible Brake problem??

Hey guys,

My roommate has a '99 runner. I was in his truck the other day and I noticed that on deceleration his truck was shuttering. The more brake he applied, the harder the shutter. Has anyone experienced this problem with their runner.

He has about 90,xxx miles and is due for scheduled maintenance. I am not sure, but I am thinking that his rotors might be warped. We live in New England and if anyone know the roads up here, THEY'RE TERRIBLE. So, anyway, the shuttering does not occur unless he is he applying the brakes.

Yup, your diagnosis seems correct. If it only happens when you are braking, then it is probably your discs. I'm not sure how bad it is, it may need to be resurfaced. Or if it's real bad, just replace them all together.

Have you guys ever done anything like this before. I can definitely do the work for my roommate, but if its gonna be PITY, then I will just tell him to take it somewhere.

As far as what to replace, I think I am going to recommend that he just get new ones. Having 90,xxx miles, I would just go ahead and replace them.

That company that makes the TRD brake pads is Performance Friction, right? Or something like that?

I've done it before, but not on a Toyota, so I can't tell you how tough it is. On the American vehicles I've changes brakes/rotors on, it wasn't too tough at all.

As far as who makes TRD pads, I have to defer to someone else.

I agree, though -- at 90K miles, take a good look at the rotors and pads. Change anything that looks suspicious. And use lots of brake cleaner so you can see in there.

I've changed out the front discs on a 93 Celica GT and they were a piece of cake (Didn't even have to blead the brake lines afterwards). I'm not sure how different it is on a SUV though. I recommend you get a chiltons or a haynes manual. I have a haynes from my celica and it was very detailed and informative. The steps are right on and I was able to tackles so simple repairs that I would otherwise just take to a shop. It saved me plenty of money and was definitely worth the money for the manual.
