Possible fuel pump?

So I've fixed most of the major problems with my 88 22re 5 speed. I still have a power problem. My weekend in Moab was terrific, the trip there was a longer then it should have been. It seems my average speed it 50 MPH, unless I can hit a downhill then I can occasionally hit 70, until I hit a slight incline, then I can sometimes keep it at 60, in 4th gear. There were a few points along the trip when 30 was the best I could do uphill, in second gear. I'm thinking that perhaps the fuel pump isn't putting out enough volume to keep it going. I was hoping someone else has had similar experience before I drop 150 dollars on a new fuel pump. The previous owner said he replaced the fuel pump with junk yard pumps a couple of times, something like this, I don't trust junk yard parts.

I think that before replacing the fuel pump I would try the cat, borrow one or stick a pipe there and go for a run. Another thing to check is the throttle cable, they do stretch over time. I had a friend that was only getting just over half throttle with his foot to the floor, didn't have any power but ran well. After we adjusted the cable it was like we changed the motor. Cheapest tune up ever.

31 10.5R15 tires. Unknown miles. I know it's close to 200K. I don't know on the cat. it's welded in. Did they originally just bolt these in? Throttle cable sounds like a good possibility.

I replaced my cat ( 87 ) and it did not really help with power on mine. It was a bolt in.

I have the same power issue as you. I am going to check / replace my throttle cable. Maybe I can get up over 65 on the interstate

Check the fuel damper. Its located at the front of the fuel rail and has a fuel line coming directly into it from the fuel filter, it looks a lot like the fuel pressure regulator but with out the vacuum hose. My 86 did the same thing for a while, and I changed everything on it, maf sensor, cat, fuel pump, regulator, filter, and finally I took the damper off and drilled a hole in the bottom to release some pressure and that fixed the problem. It leaked gas pretty bad though until I bought a new one. It runs about $85.

I checked the throttle cable. it's pretty tight and opens completely with the pedal. Think i'll yank out the O2 sensor tomorrow after work and go for a run, and see what happens, or just unbolt the flange a little before the cat. I looked at the fuel damper. Looks like about 25 years of grease build up on it If the cat thing doesn't work, I'll replace that.

Okay. unbolted/broke bolts, to the cat. drove around with some good improvement I was a little surprised I could go up a hill at 25 in 3rd gear, that I usually can't even get to 25 on. Haven't bought the cat yet, need some money, but I'll update again when all is done.

It isn't the cat , I'm trying to figure out how to easily test fuel pressure on the 22re. I had a little bit of time searching around alldata.com it said to test at the CSI, however I can't seem to find a fitting that is the right size, even checked at the local Toyota dealership and they seem to have misplaced the right part. I have a test gauge but not a fitting that will work, any ideas where I can buy the right fitting, or another place I could hook up my tester?
