Take this with a grain of salt, but what Kirk says is plausible. Cool channel if you are into Toyota/Lexus/SomeKorean cars.

Again, sorry for not being able to embed the video, but he does go into the possibility of a hybrid option. I know that will make everyone have a canary here, but since Toyota is "hybrid horny", that could very well happen. I wouldn't mind. Hell, I'm even considering getting a Hybrid RAV4 (fell out of love with the CRV). I'm in sales lately and drive a ton. My DD (07 Civic has about 300K on the click) get me about 34mpg (my 4R doesn't, LOL). What's keeping me from totally going for the hybrid is long term costs. Love knowing how to fix my Civic and 4R b/c of "simple tech" (no direct injection crap, CVT nonsense, turbos that may blow up the engine in 100K, etc etc.) No, I don't hate those technologies, I would embrace them for my next new car, but grudgingly so.
 
Kirk is a dingbat who reads internet forum rumors and turns them into YouTube videos like he has "sources."

With that said, I think turbo4 is correct.
 
I'm not defending the guy, but he does cite his sources (sites I wouldn't otherwise never hear of or go to.). Yes, it's mostly speculation, but he tries to back up his words with some logic. He basically gets his information and makes into a conversation (youtube). That is fine by me. I'd rather listen to what he has to say rather than folks (not you Gecko) who don't have a clue. Yes, sucks to hear that a possible I-4 turbo is coming, but it does make total sense. Kirks latest video talks about Lexus and how they hint about staying with the TNGAf platform (body on frame) and making off road variants of the GX/LX. There is a market for luxo-"trucks", so there's that. Lexus is a mess now (lexus pseudo fan boy here), so they need to get out of their slump by going into markets they wouldn't otherwise go. We lost the Land Cruiser, but the next gen will be here in the form of the LX............... i'm rambling....... future info of the next gen 4Runner should be leaking in the next year. Everyone knows it will happen.

Yes, absolutely. However most of our concerns are long term reliability. Then again, when Toyota 1st gen 4Runner came out, there was an optional I-4Turbo that supposedly ran forever.

Yup, I had Surfs back in the day and would enjoy the boost. I never abused my rides, but I can see folks "taking advantage of it" thus shortening the life of the turbine and engine.

Toyota hasn't jumped on the turbo bandwagon just yet, but they are beginning. (Lexus LS turbo V6, NX turbo engine) Let's hope they make them robust enough that reliability is that of their NA engines.

I'm thinking that, long-term, they'll rely more on the added power coming from a hybrid platform. Better longevity from an added motor versus a turbo, and probably acceptable power increase for most folks (Rav4 Prime). Just my thoughts.

I tried embedding the same youtube video that works on another page into this page and it wont work. Too weird.

The hybrid option seems to be very likely. I4 certainly plausible. Turbos are fine, I think. Depending on how hard they are designed to work and are pushed, you may have to replace them (in something like the 4R) every 150K-200K. In a towing or heavy vehicle, maybe 120K-140K. It is prob around $1,600-$2,200 to replace two turbos.

I'm very curious to see what they do. Deep down, I keep wishing for a big diesel in the Tundra but in the 4R, I prob want a hybrid...way better torque and way better MPG and resulting range, though at a higher initial cost.
 
I sure hope there is no 4 cylinder turbo. 4-cylinder turbos (in my humble opinion) are only for small-medium sized cars.

Larger SUVs/Trucks/Crossovers need more displacement.


Ford has done well with their ECOBoost models on the F-150, but most small turbo engines have too much lag.

Yes I know there are exceptions and I'm sure plenty of people will let me know what they are.

I'm just saying that I would not buy a 4-cylinder turbocharged 4-runner.. UNLESS it were 3+ liters. If it were 6 cylinders and turbocharged, heck yeah.

But Toyota seems obsessed with small and hybrid engines.

And these days, I'm seeing a lot of car brands add turbo engines to the lineup, but they always put it on a SMALL engine!

My wife has a Kia Sorenta N/A V6 3.3L I think. Has great torque and HP. The new model will offer a 2.5L turbo. That's a pretty good start, since they currently offer a 2.0L turbo. But I'd much rather see that as a 3L turbo, preferably a 6 cylinder. Not picky on V6 vs. I6.

I know these companies are doing it for their fleet mpg ratings.. but I WANT a turbo engine that isn't some tiny little engine that should be on a compact car!

I want it all :)
 
I think there is no getting around the turbos and hybrids. The 3.5L Ford EB has very little lag and is great around town and the highway 90% of the time. It is also pretty quick. I had an Expedition and have rented a F-150 EB many times. I have driven the 4 cylinder EB in the Mustang many times...quite a punchy motor as well. The turbos can be tuned to kick in very early. I wish diesel wasn't so polluting. More and more diesels and hybrids would be common. The hybrids are nice. The new Ford F-150 with its PowerBoost motor is FAST and has some serious torque over its V8 gas brethren.

Of course, I'm saying all this as I drive a huge diesel.:ranger:
 
It’s funny how psychologically it affects people’s choices seeing/hearing about an i4 engine in a truck. If you ever drive one that fear goes away real quick.
