Possible Strawberry milkshake question

... .. The 4wd sounds like the clicking a dead battery makes. It does it for a few seconds.. sounds like it’s coming from the diff ..it will go into 4wd but it takes some playing with the 4wd shifter. And it looks like the push button wasn’t working.

That clicking sound is a Good sound in a runner w/4wd, both the TC and the center and/or rear diff also make that click as they work to actuate/deactuate.

Yeah they can be tough to find yet don't settle, it can take 6mos to a year to find the One.

So I did a Carfax on it and it had the last service done by the mechanic who serviced it for the car lot it is currently on . Axel seals were done steering stabilizer bushings and transfer switch. I know I probably sound like a moron lol. But the clicking noise is not one click going in and out of 4wd like the last 4runner I drove . This is more of a weak battery trying to to turn a starter type of clicking if that makes sense ( electrical ) It’s a fast repetitive clicking last about 3seconds I definitely didn’t hear that in the last one I drove or my previous 4runner. It’s definitely coming from under the middle of the truck?

Ah, a fast clicking would be different. I thought you meant one click for engaging and another for dis-engaging. Yet everything works 4wd wise? :cowboy:

It was in 4wd when i got in it to test drive but the lights were flashing I hit the 4wd button to get it out but nothing happened.. the guy jumped in and took it around the lot and it did come out of 4wd ..When putting it back in 4wd the 4wd lights blink for a bit then you get the fast clicking right after for a few seconds sometimes you have to play with the 4wd shifter but it will engage. While in 4wd it sounds fine but we only took it around a small gravel lot in 4wd. My concern is it being the $2000 transfer case motor I’ve read about. It did say transfer switch replaced on the Carfax. I was thinking of starting a new thread about this problem.. this is really the only think keeping me from buying at this point.

If its an '01 its 4wd may act like mine did when i got it about 180K ago, previous owner probably never used 4wd, so it almost always refused to go in/out easily.

Followed instructions on visor, didn't help much. For some odd reason, making turns seemed to help maybe it was just a coincidence but I tried that each time after it worked the first and it continued to engage/disenage more and more easily as i used it more and more.

Skip to today, it will engage/disenage at will Without any turns, just moving forwards, I like to keep it to under 20 mph when I engage 4wd, no real reason just a habit.

Will they give you any warranty to help sell the vehicle? Maybe 3 or 6 mos?

Yeah, doing an "S" turn will help a stuck 4wd engage or disengage. Also rocking back and forth in drive and reverse, that's how I used to have to get my 91 to engage in 4wd.

However, the clicking is disconcerting. If the main reason you are getting a 4Runner is for 4wd and it's not working correctly, then pass. There's literally 100,000's of ones out there with full functioning 4wd systems. Just gotta find one for the right price.
