I want strong secure storage for items I leave in the vehicle or items don't want to have to load/unload stuff to get to.

^^ the $1000 was for the drawers posted above your reply, all the off the shelf options are expensive

If you're one of those people that keeps absolutely nothing in your vehicle then you probably don't have a use for them. I didn't have a use for a drawer system, but I did build a platform with a pullout tray, which suits my needs much better. A few of my friends have drawer systems and it helps organize recovery gear, camping equipment, and misc items that you don't feel like loading and unloading every time you're headed out the door. Some systems are so beefy that you can lock and store firearms without worry. I prefer a platform because most of my activities involve a pack of some sort, so all of my gear is basically pre-staged. However, when loaded in the truck, I lose a lot of valuable space (such as the ability to sleep inside the vehicle comfortably. In the past, I would have to unpack the 4runner at the trailhead, so I could lay flat (can't sleep in the seats...bad back:dizzy or reorganize things so I could get a little bit more comfortable. It also creates a "trunk" in the back, which now gives me some added comfort when I leave my truck sitting for a few days in the backcountry.

Hey I hav a question for you all... is there any storage at all in the 4Runner? I just got my first (2016 Limited) and I'm kind of surprised there seems to be ZERO storage compartments in the back. In my old car (Subaru Forester) there were all kinds of places to store jumper cables, flashlights, tow hitch balls, etc.

Does everyone just buy/build storage drawers like this thread?

You mean the little door on the left side that has the jack and the lug wrench? There's barely any room in there... maybe I could tie up a flashlight but definitely no jumper cables, recovery straps, or anything like that.

Hmm, I just checked and mine doesn't have any doors or compartments on the right side, just a speaker. I have a Limited, maybe the "premium sound" package uses up that storage space? If so that's a bummer.

Oh, yeah didn't think about that. Your Subaru was a unibody vehicle so all those compartments were made from when they actually had to sacrifice space to form the structure. We have no compartments but that's because Toyota can make the floor much more flat

I just did this mod yesterday. I don't know if this applies to you if you do NOT have 3rd row, but I do. It's not a whole lot of space, but it helps. On the DS i have my magnetic mounted antenna base; on the PS, gloves, a folding shovel, and a few space blankets. Just know that once you pull these floor panels free, there's no going back--I couldn't figure out how to restore them without cutting the spacers off.

I built a simple, low profile one to manage gear and dog crates, link is in my signature. I keep hatchet, shackes, strap, recovery gear, ratchet straps, shovel (little foldable foxhole type), and a few other things in there dog related. It doesn't go all the way aross but it's easy to double in size for full width.

I don't have the 3rd row and my trunk area looks pretty different, not sure if that would work. I will check it out though, thanks for the lead.

Oo this looks promising. I wonder why Toyota didn't make that panel removable, like the door on the left where the jack is stored. It's not a lot of space but I think I could fit jumper cables at least.

If they made it an actual compartment they would have had to have protected the electronics under which would probably have made it pretty small

Yeah maybe... I was thinking something along the lines of the car jack compartment, which doesn't have any lining or protection, but I suppose that's not supposed to be a general-purpose storage space.
