still got it but it's falling apart literally, rear end is all over the place, some strange elec. draw i've been chasing since day 1 (9 years) been through 2 t-cases,3 steering pumps,1 complete transmission, a bunch of gaskets, and a whole list of other littler things, and it only has 200K on it as she sits....

the motor is still killing civics and such though when i do drive it.....

sooo yeah take that for what you will, lol

i truly loved that truck, it's just too bad it was a jeep and fell apart, i take good care of my toys too, i always wash,grease,oil,and all of the rest as needed. my runner which i bought at 180K is like a new truck compared to the jeep.

I had one of those. Traded it in for my '99 SR5. Loved it! But the same was true of mine. Motor ran great (5.2). Everything else was junk, especially the electrical system.

don't know i may try and save it and make it a off road rig only, the ting about that truck is matter what kind of stupid situation i got myself in the shear power of that motor always got me out, i liked that!!! lol

yeah a 97 with 187K on it should be in it's prime by now it should have either broke or your good to go for another 100-200K if you take care of it!

naw the xj's are great go for inline 4.0 motor, don't spend more then 1K on one and flush it out for a trail only rig, they are great for that sort of thing but as a daily driver and "reliable" vehicle, that's a 50/50 i bought my girl a 1991 xj for 1.5K and 200K on the motor, the thing was babied like no other used truck i've ever seen (some rich lawyer bought it new) and it's holding together reasonably well, only had to replace the blower motor on the heater so far and the usual oil leak, it's funny cause she didn't check the oil for like 3 months and then decided to drive the jeep one day (we either carpool or she take one of the other cars) and all of the oil had gone somewhere (not on my drive way not in the engine?...?!?!) well she drove her truck 80 miles that day with litteraly almost no oil in it, there was hard crusty stuff burned on the dipstick, well after a cheesy oil flush and change it still runs great....and i think the deal with the xj's is that there's not much to them, to actually break, even though you do have to watch out for transmission problems and a few other things, that why the one i got teh girl is stick, it is also noticeably faster then the auto versions of the same xj.

xj's really are dirt cheap.

if you can, find a 92 or newer for the HO 4.0, the auto's tend to hold together better than the older sticks.

231 txfer case of a 242 is always more desireable....less binding issues when you lift.

i had 3.5'' of lift, 31's, locked, and 4.88's, and had no issues. only thing i paid for was a new radiator and a rear main seal at 205k when i bought it. heat and a/c still worked in it.

parts are a million in the jy...just gotta hunt. North American XJ Association has all the wealth of info you could ever ask for....and troll the for sale forum....someone is always selling a parts/progress rig.
