Potential Fire Hazard

Hey guys, had a small incident this weekend and wanted to give you a warning of a potential issue.

I was putting some highway miles in and stopped to pay a toll. When I was paying it smelt like something was on fire, so I pulled over to inspect. There was what I assume was some kind of dog bone shaped heat shield laying across my exhaust smoldering and smoking.

I've spent two days trying to figure out what it was. It was right by the emissions control box, kind of fibrous, shaped like a dog bone and both ends were held onto the body with a plastic nut. I drive an 03 and I guess in 15 years it finally broke in half and decided to lay on the exhaust. Any idea what it was/what part number it is? Thanks for your help!

Sounds like it was one of the heat shields that protect the underbody from the exhaust. They have been known to fall off and smolder on the top of the exhaust just like you described.

Got a picture of it?

Unfortunately I doused it in water and threw it away before I thought to snap a pic. Here is a quality recreation from Paint. It was probably about 12-16 inches long, and had a plastic nut holding it on each end. The way is was smoldering and didn't have a flame makes me think it was a heat shield for the floorboard or the emissions box, but I haven't been able to find the part.
