Powder Coat or Plastidip?

Has anyone powder coated their trail premium wheels black? If I do plastidip I'm concerned about the durability... not sure what i should do... I want to get the Nitto Trail Grapler tires 285/70/17's but before I do that I want to decide on the right approach for the wheels! Thanks ahead for your input!~

Great questions and if there is one thing I have learned over the years with mods, do it right and do it right the first time. Sure, Plastidip will save you money, but I guarantee the second you are done, you will wish you powder coated them. I have had 4 sets of wheels on the last 3 vehicles I have owned powder coated and would not do it any other way. Its durable as hell, has a great look, and you have a wide variety of colors and finishes. Trust me, spend the extra $$$ and do it right. Had my FJ wheels powder coated wrinkle matte black and love them!

Don't use plastic cheap lol, get them powder coated. I plastic dipped the wheels of my c6z corvette and I took it off within a day or two, then i had them powder coated. it's 100 times better and will last longer.
 
YEA! I'm leaning towards powder coating them glossy metallic black.... Just have to figure out the cost and process / timeline etc...

Plastidip would probably be a PITA and would probably bug the crap out of me eventually......

Anyone have pics of the TP wheels powder coated?
 
I've seen the 14+ Trail wheels powder coated, they look awesome. His was white... I snapped a crappy iPhone pic but can't post from my iPad.

I definitely don't want to hump anything into submission if it has balls to grab..

[MENTION=115996]enkrypt3d[/MENTION] plastidip if you are undecided on color. Powder coat if you are sure on the color. I change the color of my rims often usually between gun metal, anthracite and black. You can always plastidip leave it for a few month and have it powder coated if you are positive on it.
I powder coated my focus wheels and after a few months was tried of it. Had it sand blasted...back to polished. Paid 100$ a rim and an extra 15$ for clear coat. Then 25$ to sand blast them.

Here is the thing about plastidip: it is 100% reversible, 100% self repairable, and 100% customizable. While it may not be as "tough" as a PC job, dip can withstand a lot of heat and abuse. I dipped my rims on my STI and I loved it.

The biggest things that stand out pro dip

1) you don't have to worry about damaging the paint. You can peel it all off and redo it OR just touch it up. Let's say you curb your rim and you rip off some dip and have curb rash. You just sand and polish the rim and apply more dip. With PC you will have to unbolt the rim, remove the tire, send it out to be completely stripped and redone.

2) touch up is easy. Spray and let dry VS take apart and send to a professional then remount tires etc etc etc.

3) dip is almost as tolerant to heat and elemental damage as PC + sometimes better. Rain, snow, corrosion, heat... my rims have seen it all and no damage. I know people that have dipped brake calipers, exhaust parts, rims, headers, etc. It helps seal metal and protect from rust and other damaging factors.

3) cheap and 100% reversible!

Yes PC jobs look cleaner and are durable but if you take tour truck off road its not a matter of IF you will sustain some damage but WHEN you will. You can even do a simple 2x coat on your fenders to protect your paint.


I'd say if money/time is of no concern then powder coat but if you don't have a lot of one or the other then dip. You won't be disappointed with either. I had almost 15k miles on my rims and no issues with the dip. Just lay it on thick so its easier to remove.
 
I just finished painting my TE wheels black. I opted to spend the time prepping, sanding and painting over plastidip. I’ve dipped my previous wheels and they looked ok but began to peel in places. This is the second set of rims I’ve painted myself and the first are holding up perfectly over the last year in summer and Canadian winter.


 
For this application, I prefer powder coating. Plastidip had worked wonderfully for me on cars, but with my 4Runner living in the woods, I don't want to spend time constantly respraying.
 
plastidip works well for me, I used some gold metalizer to mix in with the black, and it has held up fine.

Just don't use oil based solvents to clean your rims, lol........ If you do, you will find out why you shouldn't use it.
