Powder Coating Sliders

I know there are 100 threads on what to use to paint sliders, but I'm curious for the people who chose powder coating would you do it again if you were making the same decision?

I'm trying to decide what to do because my 4runner is my daily and my sliders are more for insurance on trails and not because I plan on bashing it off of rocks every weekend. I was looking into all options including PC (found a reputable and affordable place in Charlotte), Steel-it (would have to pay about $75 to get them sandblasted then the Steel-it itself which is like $80), and simple old Rustoleum (not a fan of having to pull them off every year to redo them because they arent aging well)

I had Demello sliders powdercoated on my 4th gen and WKOR sliders powdercoated on my Tundra.

Depending on what finish you choose it's pretty simple to touch up scratches in powerdcoat using rustoleum in a can. Unless the powdercoat is applied improperly (skimping on prep work), it doesn't peel off when it's damaged usually.

I'll certainly have the sliders on my new 4R powdercoated as well.

One man's opinion anyway, and worth what you paid. YMMV.

Good to hear. And yeah the company I was looking at was going to sandblast then apply two coats of powder coat. Not sure if any other prep is necessary.

A lot of people gave me $#!+, others loved it. I don't care. It's my 4runner, it's my money. I have touchup paint from when I do scratch it up. For rock crawling, Id say paint it, just from the amount of times you are going to have to touch it up. For general weekend trips, overlanding, powder coat would be good. They have almost as many powder coat colors and effects as paint.

Do what you want. It's your ride, it's your money. If you look back at in 6 months and like what you see, you made the right choice for you.

I've had a set on my FJ Line-X'd and the set I have on my 4Runner is powdercoat. To be honest, I will be going back to bedliner material. Just as easy to touch up, and it is just more durable from my experience.

I went with Line-X on mine. I haven’t tried Powdercoat before but I’m happy with the current setup.

While I would agree with this, I was going to get them sandblasted anyway and the company said it would only be about $75-100 more to powder coat them with 2 coats of PC. I dont think thats too terrible. My only concern was touching them up if and when they get scratched

That's cheap. Do it.

Mine are coated i know they get scratched up but this is a good looking vehicle so i try to keep it looking good

I thought powder coating was a dumb idea at first, but ended up going with it.
They are ready to go day 1... don't have to wait for a warm day and deal with painting something that big.
I have full top plates - and they look good.
Really only scratched up the underside and outer edges wheeling.
Easy to sand, clean and hit with Rustoleum - matches almost perfect.

My major concern was rust "running" under the powder coat.
So far I haven't seen that but I've only gone 1 winter with this process.

For those of us that use their sliders, I have found that PC comes off in scabs if you really scrape them or the metal starts to rust underneath. My rattlecan sliders don't do that.

Powder coated my C4 sliders with a texture/wrinkle coat (wanted something that had a little grip for standing on). Cost ~$140 from a local shop as I recall, and came with a color matched rattle can for touching up. Looks good, has held up, and was minimal effort on my part.

I had mine powder coated, just because I took the easy way out. Now every couple of months I’ll sand down any damaged areas and touch up with rustoleum. They do chip more with powdercoating like what [MENTION=92049]LandCruiser[/MENTION] mentioned above. Not always the prettiest or perfect match...but their sliders doing their job so I don’t really care that much about the aesthetics. 3+ years with the RCI sliders and they’ve done their job and no rusting issues.
