If it is rust you worry about, chemical inhibition via galvanizing is your best bet. That said, I plan on cold galvanizing with spray on zinc rich primer, then put high quality paint over my sliders. Go see a commercial/industrial paint supply shop for advice on specific products. There are cheap rattle cans and better rattle cans, or brush/roll on/airless spray coatings as well. It's all what you're willing to spend, but my experience with PC has not got my confidence. It seems to me that once PC is scratched, the rust will cause whole sheets of PC to come off, whereas good primer/paint will minimize the peeling if/when the rust starts. I'm also considering using the red structural steel primer that seems to really inhibit rust well in my experience.

having abused toyotas in assorted terrain for 30+ years, rattle can all the way.
cheap to recoat, powder coat gets scratched as easy as paint when up against rocks or trees

But seriously, PC will last longer than spray paint. This day and age, you can damn near match any color pc with spray paint. My sliders are PC'd and when they get scraped up I break out the grinder and spray paint over. Who cares if it's not an exact match, it's close enough considering what you're doing to it in the first place.... Taking it offroad to get scratched up some more. If I had to do it over, I would have painted my sliders with spray paint. I just happened to get a good deal on the sliders w/ pc. My front and rear bumper though, PC all the way.

I ordered my sliders Powder coated, but will rattle can them when they get banged up. (I'm on the fence on the bed-liner stuff.)

So spray painting over chipped powder coat, if you can get the color to match, won't still leave a void from where the thicker powder coat flaked off?

Por-15 is amazing. Sold in rattle cans and pints. Goes on like paint and incredibly durable like powder coat.

Cost a bit more than standard rattle cans but well worth it.
