power antenna problem

So I'm getting a nasty grinding sound from my power antenna's motor. From what I read, it's the teeth and I can just remove the top of the antenna, pull the chain out, buy a new one and drop it in. In the mean time, is there an easy way to get to the motor to unplug it and stop the embarrassing sound for the first 20 seconds i start my car

You need to unscrew the top nut where the antenna comes out and then go behind the fender liner to access the motor. The antenna motor needs to come apart to remove the broken piece of the mast which is just a plastic peice with teeth. Once the broken piece is remove and the motor is back together, you can thread a new mast in and be good as new

when you remove the stereo theres a little box that is for the antenna unplug it thats what i did cause mines been broke for years

Hey pbcolt, welcome to SLO county. When my antenna took a dump I replaced it with a regular whip antenna from NAPA. When I took my old one apart I noticed the "chain" wasn't the only part screwed up but so was the motor. Trashed the whole thing and got the whip because i heard a new power antenna was a little pricey. I figured at least I won't have that issue again.

You dont need to remove the stereo to unplug anything or get the broken pieces out of the motor. Unplug the power connector by the motor and let the motor hang in the fenderwell while you take it apart to clean it out

i think elton was saying you can just unplug the antenna from the radio so it isn't triggered anymore.

i'll be hopefully doing my antenna repair/swap this weekend. you can find the oem antenna for cheap now

Unplugging the antenna from the radio wont shut the motor off from turning on. You need to unplug the motor itself. All the cable to the radio does is send the radio signals to the radio. Its not a power source

rofl I have the same 'ebarassing sound', it's rediculously loud. I haven't gotten around to it but I'll but swapping it for a S2000 or wrx stub antenna.

Correct. All you want to do is NOT send power to the antenna. I did the same with my truck. I will only replace it if I break the mast off completely.
