My antenna (mast) is broken too. Upon turning the truck on/off, the motor makes noise for a few seconds. I want to at least disconnect it, and I would ideally like to replace or fix it.

My radio reception is still really good. I have an aftermarket stereo that was installed before I bought the truck. Have others found that their reception is still good, even after the stock antenna mast breaks?

This is the best option. I bought a Raderra replacement 4 years ago. Then put a switch in to use it as needed. Still works like new. If you have an aftermarket stereo you will want to split the antenna to gain the diversity antenna in the rear glass. I rarely need the front one up to get perfect reception. Run the stock one up, unplug it (behind the inner fender liner) and leave it up.
If it won't come up, grab it and yank it up.

This is exactly what I did on my 97 Limited and my 99 Limited. When the "inner-workings" finally gave out, I got so tired of hearing that darn motor running every time I fired up and shut down the truck - I pulled up the antenna and unplugged the motor. Done deal.

What is this you say about a rear window antenna?

In general when we are talking about the mast breaking, we mean the white plastic gear strip INSIDE the mast breaks or no longer engages with the drive motor gear so the metal part of the antenna is intact, but does not go up and down. In this case, as long as you can leave it extended, reception is unchanged.

If you actually break the metal part of the mast, reception will be affected, but less so if the diversity antenna is connected. In some situations, it will make no difference at all, but in most it will do better with both antennas at work.

The rear window antenna is explained in the linked thread, but they are fine wires in your cargo area side glass (I forget which one.) Take a look, it's there.

Thanks. I know about the wires in the back window that you are talking about, I just didn't know what they were for. They are on the passenger side on my 4Runner.

The antenna in the front is gone. The motor runs and does nothing. There is no antenna to raise or lower. The reception is still good.

I would guess that's a stock radio and it is doing fine with the diversity antenna, unless you live quite close to the broadcast antennas and you get reception on your teeth fillings.

I'd buy a raderra mast and try to install it. You may have to remove the antenna motor and clean out plastic pieces left behind.

Replace it! I have a $2.00 ebay carbon fiber shorty and a $12.00 metra antenna kit. I like the low profile look, unlike my cb antenna lol

My antenna just snapped off in an accident, and I just ordered the shorty. Mind helping me out with the kind of antenna kit I should be looking for. The metra site has quite a few. thanks!

It was the metra kit for the 2nd gen 4runner. I didnt use the bezel that came with it I just used the spacers the shorty antenna came with to retain the antenna stem position.

I agree. I have gone through two of them from EBAY. They both worked good for two days, then the teeth begin to grind!! Found that the teeth were smaller as you mentioned!

Looks like it I am not 100% sure since I lost my database with all my receipts, but look very similar. You may want to look into the taco whip mod before you do this though. I was broke when I did this frankly and it was intended to be temporary fix.

i have replace my other vehicles antena like the one shown by Doc2012 they are very reliable and easy to install and i remove my headache of listening the old antena motor humming unand down evvery time i turn on and off my vehicle

I ditched the whole external antenna. In my case reception from the passenger window built-in antenna is good enough. Bought a rubber cover for the fender hole and never looked back.

I eliminated my whip antenna on my first-gen. Now I'd like to remove the base from the fender. May I know which plug you used on yours?

Can anyone post some pics of their fixed antennas? There's a surprising lack of pictures for this. I really want to replace my broken power antenna with a fixed one but I'd like to see how it looks first.

Not trying to steal a thread, but has anyone had any luck replacing the entire antenna motor?...how hard was it to feed new antenna wire to the radio? When I bought my 2001 the previous owner removed the motor...

Yea I've been reading a lot of threads about it. I also tracked down the Toyota part number to the fixed base and most places want around $60 or more if I remember correctly. I'd prefer the cheapest route possible to get this done. Appreciate the insight. It's been a big help.

There should be an antenna in your right side cargo window if it's a 99. It looks like orange lines in the glass. An adapter would allow you to use it instead of the fender antenna, or in conjunction. A switch in the front antenna to choose when it goes up or unplugging it or repairing or replacing as needed are all options there.

Rock Slide did an awesome write-up for enabling the rear antenna.
