I just got done doing both of mine. I went to a you pull it junk yard and found that 1/2 of the 4runners there still had the power antenna on it. The motor is never going to fail unless it gets flooded/corroded. The main problem is the plastic parts in the unit and attached to the mast. There are gears inside it that get brittle and the plastic gear on the mast breaks. All the work is easy and replacement antennas are all over eBay. I like OEM better but I did just buy one of the 12.99 antenna masts and it seems ok. We will see how long it lasts. The junkyard route is the best way to go as the parts are very cheap. I paid 15.00 for the whole units I pulled from the Junkyard. On a side note It is very hard to pull the coax cable from the dash as after it goes up into the dash it has some retaining clips. I chose to cut/splice the cable after I got a whole cord and cut my hands up pretty good from the dash and broken glass. I hope this helps.

Where did you find this antenna? I can't seem to find anything good that won't cost me an arm and a leg. If need be ill do the taco whip conversion but that is quite pricey as well

You can get them at an audio shop, or Ive seen them on Amazon.

They're about 30 bucks or so.

Another option, if you have a CB, is this thing.

I eliminated my whip antenna on my first-gen. Now I'd like to remove the base from the fender. May I know which plug you used on yours?

There is also the OEM Toyota antenna hole cover used on the base models as an option on 3rd gens. It's p/n 55796-89102. I don't know if it would fit a first gen but I thought I'd post for the others that may do this. Should be about $4 at your friendly local stealer:

Obviously, he'll have to order it. Not a stock item.

I ended up replacing the antenna itself, found out my 96 had broken plastic teeth.. I went on amazon and got a new one, only to find out after a week it would grind because it wasn't getting into the gears.. I like the Power idea for if I go offroad and I don't snag. right now I just unplugged the power from the motor and it stays up all the time. until I get it replaced.

But I don't like that location since it will get wrecked by thick brush. Does anyone know of somewhere else you can mount it further back on the car and have it pointing back on an angle? Or maybe I'll just put in one of those that were shown on the first page that go inside beside the front windshield but it would be nice to keep that area clear. I guess I could mount one of those anywhere.

Just for fun, I checked. Here is the one for a 1986 Standard (base model) 4Runner.

also got a reverse splitter ( for no other name) that connects the back window antenna and the mast and then sends one line into the radio

maybe that is how they were originally, but p.o. put in a different head unit and only had the one antenna connected, now if I turn off my automatic antenna, I still have the one in the rear window working

I concur. My 2001 had a snapped off ant when i got her. Less than $20 and an hour of your time will do the trick.

If it's just the mast, then it's a cheap fix. I bought mine off ebay for $18. Easy install. If the motor's broke, I'd go with Taco whip.

I think if you turn your wheels all the way to the right, you should have enough clearance.

I think you can, but it's going to be so much easier to do so with it off. And given how easy it is to take a wheel off...

My antenna was broken and taped up in place, and the plastic "tail" was broken off in the motor. Took the motor out, took it apart, cleaned it up, put it back in place, and inserted the replacement. Perfect fit for my 2002 4 runner sport. Works great now with no problems.
