Power Attenna

has anyone replaced there pwr attenna and if so did you have to replace the power unit or just the attenna itself? Did you do it yourself and if so was it hard?

the whole antenna part isn't too hard, just unscrew the top and pull back the fender liner and there's a bolt in there. then the cable is routed behind the glove box i think.

but the mast alone is very simple, just unscrew that chrome screw on the top, then turn on the radio, it comes out, put the new mast in the hole and turn off the radio, it takes it in. then screw on the chrome screw again.

so can I replace just the attenna w/o buying the whole attenna pwr line and motor or could I just replace the mast?

Is the mast or the motor the problem? They're notorious for being a POS. I replaced my junk power one with a cheap auto parts store manual antenna. A search for something like "4Runner power antenna swap" should yield several pages on this.

u can just replace the mast alone. just go with the instructions i put above.

I'm actually now thinking of going with one of those short black rubbery ones. I'm wondering though if it will work a power attenna unit. Any ideas?

im not following you but your stock motorized unit comes out, black rubber piece goes in and you have to pull the radio to undo the stock antenna and hook up your new one. its not hard at all

my bad I don't want to use the power unit anymore while replacing the OEM with the short rubber on. Its just a matter of not using the power wire anymore but keeping the motor in its place in case I was to change my mind back to the OEM later down the road.

i just pulled the entire thing out and saved it in my shop just in case but i can assure you i dont ever want another motorized antenna. You could still keep the motor in and replace with a rubber one though

Thanks 01t4rnr that's what I needed to know. The rubber one does just as good and isn't as tacky as the power one. Good help thanks.
