Power Drain

Was in the truck today, and noticed that my heater blower fan cut off, then cut back on. Looked at my voltage level, and it was being drained. Hit the gas, it goes up. Let off the gas it goes down, down, down, fan goes off, comes up a bit, fan goes off, you get the picture. I had both heaters on max fans, lights(no fog lights), and the only accessory was the XM radio. Is this an indication that something is going out on me. Has a new battery, and alternator, because the last alternator overcharged the battery and blew it up. Previous owner told me the the voltage regulator is part of the alternator, and that is what caused the prior problem. I had an 89 4runner, with same engine and don't remember anything like this. Any Ideas???

The alt doesn't put out as much current at low/idle rpms, and you're drawing more than it's putting out. Could be the alt, but it's also somewhat normal.

Yea if you have both fans front and rear on High and the headlights on thats a pretty good drain at Idle on the system.

Yea, I think the fan and the power drain are seperate, but related. I think the fan is sticking a little, because it's old. I've noticed now that it will just stop working regardless of power level. I can switch it off and back on, or I can just rev the motor a bit, and that gives it enough juice to move. I think the that when it gets stuck, it's draining more voltage then it should, therefore sending my voltage level WAYYYYYYY down. So, uh............anybody replaced a heater fan.

Well, I haven't replaced a fan on my 4runner, but it's not a tough job on my daughter's 1999 Camry. Took out the glove box . Then its just 3 screws that hold the fan up into the plenum. Unplug from the wiring harness and it's done. The hardest part was contorting my body up under the dash.

I only hope the 4runner is as easy 'when' it goes out.
