Power steering 97 Vs 98

My 97 has nice power steering, its precise and easy to turn but my friends 98 has insane power steering, you can turn the wheel full lock either way with a finger, if you spin it fast and let go it'll keep on spinning, why does his handle like a towncar and mine like normal? or is mine stiff and really really easy normal?



we both have v6 5speed 4x4 p265-70-16

My 99' Limited is pretty comparable to your steering effort level. It takes more to turn the wheel completely, and a finger won't really cut it.

Strange. you'd think newer models would be even easier.

I have a 98 and mine seems easy to turn (not with a finger though). To me the steering seems pretty precise, too. If I were you I would tell your friend have his steering checked out to be on the safe side.

hes on this forum. he had a leak and kept filling it with lucas stop leak until it stopped leaking..


Yeah I think you all understand what I'm trying to say. My power steering feels precise and correct. His is precise and Fisher Price easy to turn. (It does make off road driving easier)

hey im curious, im buying a 97 sr5 5 speed and the power steering fluid has a leek, would i be able to drive it home (1 1/2 hours highway) without doing any damage to the power steering pump, like does the fluid keep it cool and would over heat and burn out the pump without any fluid?

as long as the leak isn't too bad don't sweat it. Remember the 4runner uses dextron 3 (transmission fluid) for the power steering. I'd take a pit stop after 20 miles to verify the transmission fluid isn't leaking too bad. If you don't have to top it off after 20 miles it should be ok for the 1 1/2 trip. It will make a whining noise if it gets low while your driving, it will get louder with turning of the wheel. Yes it can burn up the pump if there's no fluid, but I doubt the leak is that bad.
