power steering fluid

The owners manual states dexron III as the power steering fluid pg 359.

I observed that the PS cold add mark fluid level was slightly below it. so I was going to add some to get it at the exact full cold mark so as the see if it has a leak .. opened the cap and the fluid is not any dexron tranny fluid I ever seen.

I called up the parts department . they said they use toyota T-IV transmission fluid .. which he said is a clear/light brown color NOT red.

any comments on this ? toyota japan uses some dexron III that has no dye in it or some other type fluid ,, Since 2006 GM no longer has any license for the spec on the dexron III.......

I heard that it's either a "power steering fluid" or a non-dyed Dexron III from the factory.

I think you mean "T-IV" ATF not T-VI (there is no T-VI), and yeah you can use T-VI in it without issues. I run T-VI in mine because we have it in bulk at work and I get it cheap.

I was in a similar situation to you, and topped up with DexIII ATF a year ago and have had no problems.

one of the members was given 2QTS of the max life dex/mercon tranny fluid which is the synthetic version of the dexron III.

ON my other vehicles not toyota I have used mobil synthetic dexron III spec since 1999 in transmissions no problems high miles towing etc... so I know that the mobil synthetic mercon/dexron III is the same viscosity as dexron III and being a power steering use in toyota , that is also very important. synthetic will last longer esp since the PS does get hot at times.

After doing a little bit of Google research I had decided to go with the mobile one synthetic ATF as well. I haven't used it yet but was planning on doing the turkey baster method in the next month or so.

i recently did the "lazy man's power steering flush" with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF and a large, clean, soap-dispenser style hand pump with a long tube to repeatedly empty the reservoir for a number of cycles. no problems to report.

I can't say that I really know what color T-IV fluid is. All of my Toyota's have used either Dex-III or WS.

That said, I believe the parts guy is wrong. WEB research shows Toyota T-IV to be Mobil 3309 and that fluid is the same color as all other transmission fluid.

Buy a bottle of T-IV and let us know what color it is.

I've used both plain-jane P/S fluid and Dex-III in Toyota P/S systems. I have noticed no difference.
