Power Steering Gear Box Input Shaft Leak: Replace Seal??

I had the same leak and it recently got to the point where anything over 100 miles of driving would run the PS reservoir dry. Ponied up the $200 for a new rack off carsteering.com and put it in this weekend.

Not too difficult a job. Line/flare wrenches are a must for the pressure lines on the back.

Honestly wish I did it sooner. The original rack was tired with 225k on it. I had replaced ITREs OTREs and updated the rack guide and everything was tight there, but I think things were starting to loosen up internally in the rack itself which probably caused the leak to begin with.

The new rack is noticeably tighter and actually cut down on some the vibrations I was getting in the front end. Time will tell how long it lasts given it's not OEM, but with a 3 year warranty I'm OK taking a chance. Only takes about 4 hours assuming stuff isn't rusted together.

Mine only has < 170k miles with new inner & outer tie rods, so I'd rather not have to replace the whole rack & get an alignment if I can get away with it. If I do replace the rack I will likely go OEM or the AAE rack. Going OEM will set me back abut $560, so if I can just do the seal part up at the steering gear box it would save me a bit of money. Just curious if anyone else has done this job.
