Power steering gone after pump and rack replacement

I have followed the procedures of moving the rack back and forth from near lock to lock for around 5 minutes straight with the tires off of the ground. I have tried doing this with the vehicle on as well.


After replacing the rack with a remaned unit from the rack doctor I have not had power steering. I have cleaned the reservoir and it is spotless.

I am using the correct DexIII ATF as the fluid.

Anyone have any guesses?

Do you see fluid returning to the reservoir? You may want to try calling Rackdoctor for advice. I've never had an issue with these. Any chance you have the hard lines mixed up?

Hard lines aren’t mixed up and I see the atf weeping out of the return line when I move the wheel. How forceful should it actually be?

Did you get an OEM pump or aftermarket?

It sounds like the pump isn't producing pressure.

It’s an aftermarket remanufactured pump. The OEM pump did the same thing and that’s why I replaced the pump.

You say you clean the reservoir, so the original reservoir was used on both pumps?

Ask because there's a screen in the bottom of the reservoir and if it's clogged it could be greatly reducing or blocking fluid from getting into the pump.

The reservoir was cleaned prior to the new pump install. I can see there is no blockage in the reservoir.

Well if indeed the pump is producing pressure and since you say there fluid "weeping" out of the return line it would seem that there's a blockage in the rack, I would as was suggested contact Rack Doctor and explain your issue, I know that they are highly recommended and reviews are great on their products, I have never read of a bad review, so I would think they would want to do whatever is needed to make things right if it's indeed an issue with the rack.

Just spent the past hour doing the bleeding procedure again to no avail. Ive tried contacting RackDoctor last week about shipping my old unit back and they havent responded back.

The fluid should flow out at a steady rate when not touching the wheel as it bypasses internally in the rack. Should be enough to see movement in the reservoir. Try calling Rackdoctor to see what he thinks but if you had this issue beforehand then you may need to disconnect the lines and try blowing compressed air through them. Sounds like you have a blocked or collapsed line. Do these things have power steering coolers on them?

Got a new rack coming in from them. I’ll run some compressed air through it and see what comes out.

I do not see a ps cooler and as mentioned earlier I do see fluid flowing in the reservoir when not touching the wheel.
