Power Steering Pump Fun

I started my truck up today and the ps pump pulley and shaft started working their way forward. It caused the belt to come off and if I want I can completely pull the shaft out of the pump assembly. It doesn't leak fluid though when I leave the shaft in.

I have a few questions.

1. Is the shaft held in with a c clip?
2. Has something similar happened to anyone else and were you able to fix it without completely replacing the pump? A rebuild kit is ridiculously cheaper than any replacement pump, I just don't know if they usually come with the stuff needed to hold the shaft in place.

Okay, don't laugh. I got curious a few weeks ago and tore my old one apart. Just unbolted it and it opened right up.

Thing is, it sits in here:

So I'd be curious as to what's happened in there and how it could come apart as described unless the shaft broke or? I should have been paying more attention while I was fiddlin' around!

IF you were going to take it apart maybe have one returnable ps pump on the side, in case it isn't a fixable?

[MENTION=5345]habanero[/MENTION] that's some great work there on the PS pump. There is nothing wrong with taking stuff apart to learn the way they work, I've done it to many of things, problem is putting them back together in working condition.
