Power steering pump on way out?

Ok, just replaced all 3 belts and tensioner on my 2002. Everything went fine . Today after about 5 mins of driving i heard a humming noise from engine bay. Once i got home i checked again. It changes with rpm and seemed to be coming from power steering side. I don’t have a stethoscope so i used the screwdriver trick. I definitely feel a vibration and can hear the wine through the screwdriver coming from the pump. What do you guys think? Pump? It does have almost 190000 mikes on it. Keep in mind the steering is fine and does not make noise while turning. Just gets more pronounced with rpm change but can be heard a tiny bit at idle.

Ok my mechanic came to check it out. He said ps pump is fine but it sounds like sound coming from behind timing cover. I’m assuming the belt rollers or tensioner can go bad over time. This is a JDM motor with supposedly low miles. Installed almost two years ago. He did loosen belts a bit too but now they are making noise too. Another question i have , what is the part called that the fan pulleys bolt to? It seems it sticks out a tad farther and the pulleys are slightly out of line. Would like to get correct part. He also advised on a new crank pulley as mine has a slight wobble. Which i know could mean a few things. Funny thing is i had bolt and woodruff key fixed last year .
 
If your P/S pump makes that low whiney noise, clean out the screen under the reservoir. Fixed mine instantly.
 
OP: let us know what happens.

I just changed my timing belt, the tensioner pullies, and the belts. have some noise at RPM >3k, so wondering if you have similar issue. I tightened based on feel, didn't have a belt tension gauge.

The more i listen to it the more it sounds like a bad bearing somewhere. I’m gonna change out the fan pulley bracket because for some reason it sticks out a little further than normal causing pulleys to Be slightly out of line.

You can take off all three belts for a short time (seconds, not hours :)) and see if the noise goes away - that will tell you if it's one of the belts or driven items (PS pump, alternator, etc) or something behind the timing cover.

And then proceed from there, start reinstalling one belt at a time and see when the noise comes back.

As to your other question, the fan bolts to the fluid coupling (I think it's 0892104950, but double check), which (along with two pulleys) gets attached to the fan bracket subassembly (1630762011) studs: https://parts.villagetoyota.com/sho...ar=2002&ukey_trimLevel=14036&searchString=fan
 
I would do what Leon suggested but maybe in a different way. Start with the outer most belt which is the power steering belt and remove it. Run the engine and see if the sounds goes away. If not, remove the next belt in line and that's the AC belt. If the engine is still making the noise, now remove the Alternator belt. If you get all three belts off and the noise is still present, it's most likely something coming from behind the timing cover. I would get a mechanics's stethoscope though. It helped me narrow down a sound on [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] rig after we did his timing belt job. They are very affordable. Here's the one I bought via Amazon:

If you find the Power Steering Pump is the culprit, this video will show you how to renew the fluid and clean out the fine mesh filter screen inside the pump. Like was mentioned above, a dirty reservoir screen can cause the PS Pump to whine.

Thanks fellas. Fan clutch is pretty new. I actually just bought a stethoscope . If it ever stops raining I’ll check it out.
 
Ok I put the stethoscope up to bearing support and it’s coming from there. High pitch squeal like it’s metal on metal. Now the question is do i go with Aisin which is over a 100 at Rockauto or Gates which is 30 bucks less?

Are you talking about the fan bracket that the fan clutch rides on? If you don't rely on your 3rd Gen as a daily driver, here's what I would try first. Check your local PickNPulls or wrecking yards for a 3rd Gen 4runner, 1st Gen Tacoma, a 1st Gen Tundra or maybe even a T100. If you can find one with the engine still in it, you could pull the fan bracket off and save some money.

If you're not into looking for a used one at a wrecking yard, I'd go with OEM. I think the extra $70 is money well-spent because it would suck to be on a road trip and have a cheapo aftermarket bearing fail on you leaving you stranded.

On a side note, I think the fan bracket bearing was most likely on it's way out but the belts were overtightened when the new belts were put on and this accelerated the demise of the bearing. A belt too loose might slip on the pulleys but a belt too tight puts excessive strain on the pulley bearings and you get what happened to you. But, I could be wrong and it's a total coincidence the fan bracket bearing decided to give up the ghost shortly after the belt renewal.
 
Yes fan pulley bearing support i think it’s called. I thought about going used but would hate to install a bad one . I think your theory is correct. The new tight belts probably sped up the destruction.
 
I went ahead and orders the Aisin part. Was 30 bucks more but Inrwad some bad reviews on the gates stuff. While I’m here, does anyone have any tips on fixing my exhaust leak on driver side header connection to downpipe? It drives me nuts . I’m thinking about headers.
