Im doing a lot of maintenance on my 4runner rebuilding Supercharger, upgrading alternator(dc power 270) water pump, plugs, hoses new main battery and Im trying to find a write up or video on replacing the power steering pump. I wanted to upgrade to a heavier unit, but cannot locate any so Im going to replace it, but could some pointers so I only have to do it once. My Tundra steering rack from solo motorsports has put a lot of stress on pump so changing it out whilst truck is torn down makes sense. any help is appreciated. Thanks guys.
Based on the other work you are doing I assume you are relatively mechanically savvy. So, I’ve provided some generic instructions below. It’s really not much different from the alternator other than lines and fluid in place of wire harness and connectors.
Gather tools and materials: You'll need tools to drain the fluid, disconnect lines, remove the pump, and install the new one.
Drain the power steering fluid: Disconnect the return line and drain the fluid into a container.
Remove the old pump: Disconnect the lines, remove the pulley, and detach the pump from its mounting points.
Install the new pump: Attach the pulley, connect the lines, and secure the pump in place.
Flush the system: Connect the return line, fill the reservoir with new fluid, and flush the system by turning the wheel lock-to-lock.
Important Considerations:
Pulley: The pulley is usually splined and should come off the old pump and onto the new one.
Fittings and connectors: You may need to reuse fittings and connectors from the old pump, so ensure they are compatible with the new pump.
