i want to buy a 4runner, but i want the v6 in it, also i was wanting the power windows and cruise control, but will survive without them. main question is does the 3vz have enough power to drive at 80mph without a problem or is it under powered. i know the 22re ive been told with have issues there, but i have a 30 minute drive to school everyday and its all highway. speed 75-80 so i want to make sure they will be able to handle it.

Wow...a chance to help someone BEFORE they made a mistake!

Do NOT buy the 3.0 V-6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a poorly designed, underpowered, code throwing, problem wrought, head gasket breaking, gas guzzling, dog of an engine. Buy a 4runner that came from the factory with a 3.4...not one that someone made a 3.4 fit into. Just my 2 cents.

The 3.0 will do 75-80, but if you buy one make it a 5-speed. And I also agree, save some extra funds and buy a 4runner with the 3.4. Coming from experience.

Tell us how you really feel :)

:)I was on a roll there...did I leave something out....Yep, I did...valve cover gasket oil spilling super tanker.

In all honesty my engine hasn't let me down...but then I haven't put it to the test since buying it. The fact it has 168,000 on it says something. However, if I were able to turn back the clock I would have bought the 3.4 model for peace of mind if nothing else.

The guy wants a 1st gen, so his options are limited to the 22RE or the 3.slo.
OR a swapped in larger engine.
If you absolutely want a 1st gen, get one with the 22RET ( turbo ) then you can keep up with traffic.
You can always swap in a built up 22RE that has much more horse power, but it will cost ya $$$.

well as much as id like the 22ret, i havent found any here. there was one for sale last year. but i havent found any this year. i want an 88-89. 4wd 5sp. but since i cant find the 22ret. im going towards the 3.0, or can you just put the turbo on the 22ret? just get the turbo, manifold, intercooler, the rest of the components and guage. and hook it up? would that be smarter then the 3.0. i mean ive found only a few 3.0 for sell and i want the power to drive on the highway since this will be a daily driver with only a small 5" lift on the ifs until i can really afford to get the sas done.??

OH and what is the difference between the efi and sr5???
and i found a 86 that says efi sr5 on the back gate???

HELP

SR5 is a trim package ( usually power windows, locks, sunroof, altimiter guages on the dashtop )

EFI is Electronic Fuel Injection

Here is a turbo 1987 4Runner near Orlando Florida ( good excuse to come down out of the cold )
Very rusty, but it is a turbo :) and only asking $1,700
1987 4-runner 4x4

That is true, you can convert a 22RE to a RTE but you are going to need a donor vehicle to do it. All turbo 4runners came with automatics from the factory, several have already been swapped to a 5 speed.

the 22re can't possibly be using the same internal components as the 22rte I don't see how it would reliably function with the added boost the crank, c rods etc must be different, my advice would be to go with the 3.0 it's not as bad as people make it out to be if it's running properly I own an 88' with the 3.0 5spd has 403,000kms and runs great mind you the engine has been well taken care of also I find it more than adequate as far as power just leave it in gear to 4-4200rpm around here the highest speed limit is 120kmph so I haven't really gone above that, I should also note it is a gas guzzler though :)

o ya I also removed the cat. this may be why I get a little more power than some of the other members here probably also cuts down on HG failure especially if the cat. is clogged up...

Just my 2 cents:

In a 4Runner, a V8 is the best option. You'll really enjoy the power on the road and the difference in gas mileage is negligible. I have an '08 SR5 and my average highway is 19 mpg. I also have a '10 Tacoma with a V6 and it's average highway is 21 mpg - remember that the Tacoma is a much lighter vehicle.

As for auto vs. manual transmission, unless you intend to do some very serious off-roading, get automatic.

I used to do some serious off-road in Colorado, when I lived there and had a manual transmission, but after a time, I really became tired of all the shifting in the city and in highway traffic.

My first 4runner was a 22re with a 5-speed and no options. It ran great and I didn't feel that it was a problem on the highway. I would definitely get another 22re with a 5-speed.

After that one was written off in an accident I bought a 3.0L V6 with an automatic. I can tell you that this 4runner feels way slower than the other one. Whenever I'm on the highway I use the O/D off button before even small hills because the auto is such a massive slush box that it will literally lose 20kph before down-shifting unless you mash the gas pedal.

There's also that whole headgasket problem with the 3.0 V6.

I don't plan on buying another 3.0 V6.

You should look at some of the cheaper mods that you can make to the 22re to gain some power. Check out lcengineering.com.

he's looking at 1st gens so V8 isn't an option

I was under the impression auto is better for off road?

there's a world of difference between the auto and manual version, I'm really not sure why people say the 3.0 is so slow I mean it's no Ferrari but it's a TRUCK! my drivetrain must be in great shape because I don't find it all that bad, I have no problems reaching speed up hill at all and doing 120kmph on the highway isn't an issue either I have also laid a few patches in first through to second no prob. not saying anyone here is wrong just stating my experience with the 3.0 5spd

I'm planning on putting a new exhaust on mine and when I do, I'm going to remove the cat and shove a pipe through the middle of it. No emmissions here and it should increase the power.

What kind of mileage do you get in yours? (Hwy & City)
