Powersteering Fluid Question

Had a quick question, I just bought a new 4runner and it has normal PS fluid. Do I have to flush every bit of it out to replace it with ATF, or is some mixing okay?

-Normally what I would do is siphon out as much as possible from the reservoir, fill it with fresh ATF. With the front end on jack stands I would start the car and cycle the steering and repeat the process. Would that be acceptable way to go about it?

I flushed mine out with ATF, it has PS fluid in it when I got it. When it started coming out clean and red I knew I was done.

Nice, but you know what is coming.....

I hope you got Singtoe's approval. I hope he is doing well with the project.

I will get some decent pictures tomorrow after its had a bath. I didn't get Singtoe's approval, surprise!

i just swapped out my pump the other day(pump was bad) and so i did a flush at that time too...

i just unhooked the return line, and aimed it down into a bucket, and capped the inlet into the reservoir(so the new clean fluid would not drain out through that opening. then i filled the reservoir with new clean atf, then had my dad start the truck(works best with two people) and turn the wheel back and forth, while i added the atf. i went through about 3.5qts and after 2.5 it was all nice and red -did the last qt just to be sure. when it was coming out all nice and clean (bright red) i uncapped the return port the reservoir, and re-hooked the return line back up. then filled the reservoir once more and restarted the truck up got all the air bubbles out and made sure it was at the proper fluid level. it took about 5min to do and was super easy(the truck was on jack stands and its best to do it this way as it takes the load off the tires so that if you get air pockets in the system its under a heavy load so no real harm is eminent)

Hi can anyone tell me how much fluid fills the reservoir? I wasn't able to to the full flush, but put vacuum pump in and got as much as I could. I find the gauge on these this not that accurate. Thanks!

From the FSM(total fill to a dry system):

Power steering fluid
Total 0.8 liters (0.9 US qts, 0.7 lmp.qts) ATF DEXRON® II or III
