Practical 4WD/Crawl Usage Stories

Maybe the title doesn't do it justice, but I was curious how many of you out there have used your 4WD/Crawler system in an every day situation.

I know these components really shine when you're doing special purpose extreme activities such as rock climbing/dune conquering, but I'm curious how often you've found yourself using/needing the 4WD system in normal conditions and what the circumstances were.

I just received my '16 T4RTE on Friday and planned to use it when visiting my ranch which might require the 4WD system to get through the mud when it's nasty out, so it's more of a practical application rather than a sport hobby for me.

I use 4LO several times a week. Crawl control has been handy, maybe 4-5 times in the last 140K miles. It is useless rock crawling, which is most of my off road use, as even at the slowest setting will be smashing you into obstacles. It is better for deep snow/sand/maybe mud.

I don't have Crawl in my SR5, but I've used 4LO with ATRAC quite a few times. It's gotten me out of quite a few places where open diffs would have left me stuck.

I don't do extreme rock crawling, just poorly-to-never maintained service and hunting roads. Some of them have rock ledges, deep ditches, and mud holes.

If you plan on going off road a lot, especially if mud is involved, the absolute number-one upgrade would be a set of AT or MT tires. I ran my stock HT tires until they were bald, and I never got stuck, but I would have been a lot more daring if I'd had better tires.

Define "normal conditions". I'm in 4WD several times a month when I'm out and about, that's normal for me . I'm not always looking for reasons to engage it, but sometimes I find them anyway.

Agreed. I find A-Trac good for driving over idiots on Vegas traffic, especially the ones that cut right in front of you then slam on the brakes.
