Pre/Post 1/99 head gasket differences

I'm attempting to order a R side passenger head gasket for a 3.4L. My problem is that there are two different part numbers depending on if the motor was from a vehicle before or after 1/99. The last 7 digits stamped on the block do not match the T4R that it was pulled from, so I'm not sure that I can find out what year this motor is from. What differences are there in the block/head that would warrant the use of a different head gasket?

Pre 1/99 R head gasket: 11115-62071
From 1/99 R head gasket: 11115-62081

Out of curiosity, could that be because Toyota improved the head gasket design?

If that were the case, I'd imagine that the newer gasket (and part number) would replace the older one (as you can see with other parts), but it's not showing as a replacement in this case.
 
It seems to me that if only the gasket changed part numbers, and neither the head nor the block changed numbers, then that gasket is an improved version and would thus retrofit older engines.

Occam's Razor, etc.
 
You'll want the newer head gasket. The early ones were composite, the newer ones are MLS.
 
Checked at the dealer and only the newer headgaskets (from 1/99 onward) had an update in part number. The older ones didn't change from the original. They unfortunately didn't have any on hand and neither does any other dealer close to here to compare. How certain would you say you are that 11115-62071 is a composite gasket, and that 11115-62081 is mls?

Dealer showed me that 11115-62081 replaced/superseded 11115-62080. Perhaps only 11115-62080 was composite?

Felpro's head gasket shows the same part number for 98 & 00, both being mls, so a material change would make sense in that regard.

Compared to the 2nd gen, I've barely heard of any HG failures, but now that I think about it, I don't recall if most of the 3rd gen HG failures were 96-98.5 or included all years.
 
My HG was replaced TWICE through Toyota's HG recall campaign. Didn't cost me a penny, and that's another reason I love Toyota!:whoo:

The headgaskets issues on the 3VZ-E and 22-RE engines was due to the fact that the heads were aluminum and the engine block was iron. They would expand and contract at separate rates until the gaskets themselves failed. It was usually on the back of the engine where there was the most heat.

I loved my old Toyota Pickup, but absolutely despised that engine. Was definitely one of Toyota's worst.

Doesn't the 5VZFE have an iron block with aluminum heads?
 
I’ve heard oh 5vzfe with bad head gasket. I even had that experience. But not so much where it was recalled ? Was a 3rd gen head gasket ever on recall??

The 5VZ & 3RZ are both iron/alum.

It has a note stating:- Toyota used composite head gaskets thru 1999- late model 1999 and on used a MLS head gasket stock. The MLS head gaskets will work on all years and models.

Did you ever figure this out? I've got a 96 that needs HG's. I don't want to put on the older style HG's if the newer HG's will work.

the 22R 22RE engines did not have a problem blowing head gaskets 22RTE did if you upped the boost of the turbo. it came stock with a waste gate that opened about 7psi. When people tried intercooling and raising the boost the gaskets were gone. They ended up solving with head studs and o ringing the block

the 3.slow 3VZE blew lots of head gaskets and had a factory recall because of the cross over pipe from the right cylinder bank to the left. the cross over pipe dumped right into the back of the right manifold and then both sides hit the head pipe a few inches down. the heat this generated caused the problem 3rd gens still have the cross over but it connects to driver side way down below the driver exhaust manifold

when replacing head gaskets you need to know what you are putting in before you send to machine shop, they use a different pattern (milling) depending on the gasket, sometimes you need to deck the iron block and the bottom of the aluminum heads to decrease the chance of failure
 
MLS and surface treatment

I am changing the head gasket on my 4runner 1999 (manufactured in mid 1998). 5VZ-FE
The previous owner had changed the gasket by installing a composite.
I'm thinking of using an MLS kit, Ajusa or Victor Reinz (Mahle), or saving money with Apex or ITM (I accept advice), but I have doubts.
I read that the surfaces in contact with the MLS gasket must have a specific (almost mirror) treatment to work correctly. I only dismantled the two heads and I am going to rectify the surfaces, but I am not going to dismantle the iron block and send it to rectify.
Has anyone had experience regarding the change from normal gasket to MLS with the simple surface treatment of the heads?

While there maybe some that have done more head gasket jobs than I. I have done 4 HG on 5vz-fe over the last couple of years. My suggestion to you is to send the heads off to a Machine shop to have the heads resurfaced, valves cut and valve lash set if you intend on keeping it for any length of time for me the service was about 500 dollars. If you just swap the head gaskets usually the valve lash is already out and doing the shim thing is a pain and can add up fast if you have to change a bunch of them. The engine will end up running much smoother and quieter and you don't risk having a leak from a warped head.:reddance:
