Pre-purchase Advice

I drive a 2017 Pro, my wife drives a 2019 orp with kdss. I prefer my pro. It doesn't sound like there is more cost for the pro, so I'd buy the pro.

Hmm, can you elaborate on the difference(s) involved with each drive? I have a perspective limited to dealer test drives. In this situation the pro is no more expensive than what I'm looking at currently, just lacks the moon roof and KDSS that seems to get more of the rave reviews.

I love my ‘19 Pro, the Fox suspension feels better to me than the Pro Bilstein setup previously.

If I were comfortable going new this would be an easy choice...but the newest car I've owned was 8 years old when I bought it with well over 100k miles...this is a big enough leap for me as it were. Not ready to drop close to 50 g's on a vehicle.

Yeah I feel exactly the same way about em. Both options are $30xxx with close to 70k miles. Both one owner, serviced, great condition. The ORP comes in just a bit higher with a bit less miles, and with the sun roof and KDSS. That's what I'm leaning towards now, but I haven't told the poor people with the Pro yet just in case.

I would say focus on value. Is that 30xxxbefore tax?

A new ORpremium with no extras is like 37,200 with Costco pricing. Try Camelback in PHX or Precision in Tucson. Right Toyota in Scottsdale is I think the biggest 4R dealer in the country by a lot.

30,000 and change, if before tax, is only 7,000 less for a vehicle with 70k. The Pro suspension, if the original one, is probably gone already or close to gone and surely worth nothing at those miles.

If that is 30,000 out the door, consider that KDSS is unique, cannot be added but is expensive to fix if it ever craps on you. While the Pro suspension is probably gone at 70k.

Just trying to give you more info to consider.

Also, interest rates on new vehicles are lower and insurance on a new 4R is cheap anyway. Compared to cars.

So both of the Pro Suspensions feel better to me than the stock SR5 suspension, less nose dive when braking and noticeably better off road. That is where it works even better. Good luck with your purchase either way!

My wife's orp doesn't have the sunroof. If it did I wouldn't be able to sit up straight. I've only driven it on the street, and I would rather drive my pro. I think it rides and handles better. If you were buying new I could see saving some money on the orp and buying a better suspension than the pro. However for the same money, I'd get the pro.

Sounds like you can't lose with either choice . If you back out on the pro, don't feel too bad. I'm sure it will take them like 15 minutes to find another buyer.

My KDSS rear piston has a bit of a leak which some day will cost me some money. Also the front end clearance is much worse with KDSS. But street manners are much better with KDSS.

I think you should decide on KDSS or not then the decision is easier.

Agree with MAST4R. If you're up in the $30's for a vehicle with 70K miles, be sure to price new before you pull the trigger.

I got KDSS for the extra articulation off-road. The dive on non-KDSS models can be corrected with a lift/suspension which will include better shocks. One other note, KDSS adds weight so if you are going to do any mods KDSS is just additional weight.

I got my 4Runner without a sunroof, and I am thankful that I did. Extra headroom, no chance of a sunroof leaking, shattering, or making any noises! I see value in the sunroof, but that's one perk the old TRD Pros had is no sunroof. Go for it. 4Runners are awesome

Thanks for the two cents everyone. I think the way I’m seeing it I’d feel cheated if I paid more for something with arguably inferior/deteriorated suspension versus being able to get a trail or ORP with the same features essentially plus a sun roof and KDSS. Maybe I put a roof rack on anyway but maybe I can work out the best of all worlds. And for 500 or less I can swap out the grille to match the aesthetic I want. I did take one last tour at the dealer to rule out the viability of brand new as a better option, and even with the Costco program it just didn’t get there for me - still after invoice discount I’m in the low 40’s with the features I want and the interest rate is no better and supposedly with the trucks they try to encourage leases over finance.(?) I really weighed out the investment and what I want out of it and comfortability of paymentsvs cash outlay etc... Maybe there’s something to be said for leases but i’m not there yet. I also tried to spin around ona. KDSS runner and honestly it’s hard for me to make out a difference on a test drive either way. Leap of faith in favor of KDSS lol. So anyway, I have the trail premium on the hook still so if all goes well by Tuesday I’ll be back in a “new” runner with all the things...except cooled seats.

I'm K.I.S.S. kinda guy, never been a fan of the KDSS or previously XREAS, just more shit to fail. I only liked sunroof when I was a smoker years back. They all squeak.

I just picked up an OR today. I can't tell you what to pick but all I can say is to do your homework, don't get excited when car shopping. Have a hard number in your mind and stick to it.

I've been to 5 dealers, only let the last one run my credit. Traded in my Sienna(I tried to sell it on CL, most I could get was $7000) for $8200, no money down, 3.23% on $30000 financed through 3rd party bank.

Now matter what the dealers tell you, the car market has been in a slump for at least 5 months straight.
