So I finally found a 2006 v6 4x4 (140k) with every maintenance item done on time or better. Coolant was flushed at 60k by first owner, 110 by second owner. All fluids replaced at 75 at new purchase. Oil, diff, ps, brake all have been done as scheduled.

I went to check it out, no leaks anywhere other than the pass side valve cover leaking a little bit. Rear main looked good, no drippy drip on anything under engine. Cv boots look good as well. Checked actuator on 4hi from a stop which make a small clunk upon engagement from a stop, 4lo pops in with no problem. I hear a slight ticking from the engine that sounds like it's coming from the dohc valve system.

Upside notes, I know owner 2 (most recent 70k) has at least a 20 minute drive to work so most drives allowed the engine to come to full op temp. All maintenance records are included.

2 questions follow this,
what did I miss?
and with the issue of head gaskets, (as this was an early 06 build,is a vacuum test the only way to confirm I don't have any issues there?
Thanks!

Check Frame rust with any used car.
Ticking is normal and will be slightly louder on the sides of the car than if you stood in front.

4wd clunk is normal for me, system Engages better while driving under 30. Again this is just with my experience with my runner.

Check brake condition. Our calipers have a tendency to lock up. I've had a front lock up while my brother had a rear.

Also drivers and hatch window can have problems, make sure they function without fuss or noise

A used car inspection is never a bad thing. I educate myself as best I can in a vehicle before I purchase, just to make sure I don't get screwed.

Good luck!

No rust, all windows work including hatch and door. Brakes felt good with even firm pressure, no shudder or vibrations. Pads replaced fairly recent and rotors turned.

Anyone got anything on the head gaskets - how to check? This is an 06 but an early build and from what I saw there were a few early builds on the list here,

Head gasket

Some indicators are rough idle on a cold start and oil in the #6 spark plug hole. i also think theres a P code but it skips my memory right now. Have you tried the head gasket thread?

Yup I've read the entire hg thread - I've been a long time lurker just waiting for my opportunity to get one.

I gues what I'm asking is if there are any signs or symptoms that would indicate some coming troubles other than vacuum or pulling plugs. Doesn't sound like it though. Seems like everything's fine then the next day you go to start your truck and kathunk kathunk thunk.
