Pre-Runners

Ok gang, lets see and hear about your Pre-Runner projects. Soon I plan on building my rig for this purpose. Im looking at Camburg, or Total Chaos Long Travel Kits for the fronts. I like Fox's new DSC coil overs along with Kings coil overs as my choice in shocks. In the rear, well, its kinda open to suggestion. Has anybody seen the cool looking Cantilever kits in the Race Dezert Classifieds? This rear kit seems to be the long awaited answer to real long travel rear suspension for our T4's. The rear cantilever suspension, if it works for us, allows up to 15" of wheel travel. Now that sounds great! All of the guys Ive spoken with who has some sort of long wheel travel kit on the front of their rig complains about the rear not being able to keep up with the front suspension due to the lack of travel in the rear.
Also, when you add a long travel front suspension, we need new fiberglass fenders. Who what and where is the source for these?
Here, I want to see and look at your builds. The highs and the lows. The do's and the don'ts. Im even thinking of building a cage. Which if I do that, opens up the rear suspension to do more things with. Anyhow, POST EM UP!

I built my own long travel kit. 4.5" over each side, cycles about 14.5" of travel using a FOA 8" stroke coilover. I used the factory balljoint on the lower pivot and a 1" uniball on the upper arm. As for rear, I plan to make all new links with heim joints, and slap some 12" bypasses in there with custom mounts.

Read the_josh's build thread. He has custom shock mounts to fit eyelet style shocks. Theoretically you could raise the mount 3 inches or so, and drop in a 13" travel shock to make full use of your available travel. If measuring from the stock location, roughly 15" compressed length and 29" extended would use all the available travel with 33s.

Definitely not a bad way to go. I was thinking of doing something like this in the rear, but keeping the factory mounts on the axle would be much easier.

Have you guys seen the cantilever rear kit that yields 15"of rear travel for our rigs over on the Race Dezert classifieds section? A bit pricey. But when you consider spending 10k on a top of the line front suspension system, this rear deal could be worth a look.

I've been wanting to do this to my 4Runner. Seems pretty cheap too- mainly just the cost of the shock and some welding. Some of those FJs are running a 3-link, but even a 4-link can take advantage of "outboarding" your shocks. And it is a lot easier to find bypasses with eyelet style top mounts too.

The bolt-in MT long travel shocks are 28.5" extended, 17" compressed. If you could find a 13" travel shock and mount it high enough so its compressed length matched roughly the point where your tire rubs your upper fender, you would have as much droop as the MT LT kit and the same up travel as stock! You would need 33's to take full advantage of this though.

FJ's, which have a bigger fender well than our 4Runners, If you go with 35's you might as well just get the MT LT kit as you'll need the 3" bump stop extensions anyway. So the same goes for 4Runners from what I've seen.
