McNeil Hood Protector

OK here are some pics I just took of the McNeil hood protector on my 4Runner. Oh yeah, only costs $60 compared to teh $100+ Toyota one.

Sorry about the size of the files. Now if you close your eyes and squint just right you can imagine them on your black 4Runner.

Just won't look as sweet as it does on my Salsa Red one. :p
 
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep rock chips off of the hood without a bug deflector? I drive the highway every day and I had the Toyota OEM on my 03 Runner and didn't care for it too much as it sat up high and still left the painted portion to the left of the lights exposed. On my 05 Runner I have the Canadian one and its ok but just unsure if I want to get it again on my 08 or 09, whenever I trade this one in, but the rock chips are a MAJOR problem. My truck began to look like swiss cheese with all the dings.

A 3M clear 'bra' will fix that problem. Just google for a local dealer.
 
Are the clear bras good for snow/ice? I assume that they are well made as well. I would rather spend the money on that as I like the look without any covering but just get so many darn nicks in my hood. I wonder if they tend to peel after awhile with rain/snow and washings...maybe for the next Runner.

How do the various bug shields attach?

Do they all attach in existing holes?

Do some attach strickly using 3M tape?

I appreciate any input owners could give!

1) Some do and some do not. I was particular and purchased one that did not. Most OEM deflectors do not as I understand it.

2) Not sure but would you really want to trust one that was held on by just tape? Lots of force buffeting the deflector there to just reply upon some adhesive.
 
new to the forum and just purchased a 07 SR5, have a OEM bug deflector and the instructions are crap, anyone have any idea on how to do this?
 
Don't they just hook on to the existing holes that are already on the hood? Should be about a 5 minute install once you find the holes.
 
I just bought a color matched (Titanium Metalic) deflector from someone here. It should arrive tomorrow. I was not a big fan of them originally, I did like the ones that matched the color of the truck, so I guess I got extremely lucky!!
 
For sale

I bought an 04 4runner and it came with a bug deflector. I don't really need it where I live so I took it off. If anyone wants to buy it, pm me. Im thinking like $25.

scored a brand new set of 4 in channel AVS window visors and an AVS hood bug deflector all for 20 bucks! installed free also! the guy even unpackaged it from the box in front of me and installed..all for 20 bucks!
 
this is what i found on weathertech!!!!

I installed this on my 2007 Toyota 4runner back in 2007. Installation was easy enough--no drilling required. Only thing that needed to be done was to loosen the front grill plate to slide the edge of the deflector in, and then 2 screws to existing holes on the underside of the hood and it was secured...

The deflector seemed to work well enough--I'll never know. I still got innumerable bugs etc... as well as 2 rock chips that eventually cracked the windshield requiring replacement.

HOWEVER, I decided to take the deflector off yesterday, and when removing it, noticed that where the deflector sat flush against the front of the car hood (where it tucked into the grill edge) there were numerous (over 1 dozen) paint pit marks--undoubtedly from where the plastic rubbed directly against the paint. Even worse, the pits were all showing rust!

I just sent an email to Weathertech yesterday, and am still waiting for a response--I wouldn't hold my breath however, waiting for a resolution.

This deflector WILL rub your paint and eventually cause rust. The only way it can avoid this would be to re-design a full-floating deflector, a relatively easy fix.

I would AVOID this bug deflector (and probably all other ones)!!
