Preload vs. Topout?

If a 3/4 inch spacer is going to be run on the front of my 03 4runner, and both are the same brand, should I go with a preload or topout? My 4runner is a daily driver, I'm just doing this for looks. I don't take this one off road. I hear ride quality is the same as stock with a topout (this is the big one for me, I want a stock like ride), but I'm concerned with overextending. With the preload I don't have much to worry about, but I hear the ride suffers. Will there be a noticeable difference in ride quality with a smaller spacer such as the 3/4 inch one? Thanks!!!

A 3/4" topout spacer will get you 1.5" of lift . Is that what you are shooting for ???

I would just go with a topout.
 
Yes, a net lift of 1.5 is my goal. I can get a 3/4 inch spacer (same brand), only difference is that one's topout and hte other's preload. The preload seems better due to less chance of overextending (don't know if this is an issue with just a 3/4 inch spacer). I'm unsure which to go with, but I'm getting anxious to place an order and don't wanna make the wrong choice. Thank you!
 
If you don't offroad, overextending might not be as much an issue for you as ride quality. Just a thought.
 
Yes over extension is possible , but in the 4 years I've been on here and seeing people with spacers and off roading I never heard of it happening to anyone.

I would not worry about over extending , people OR with spacers all the time. Now if your rock crawling with major flex that would be different.
 
I guess the big question is how much would the preload spacer effect my ride? If it would hardly be noticeable, it seems that'd be the clear choice. However, if it would definitely show a rougher ride, then I'll take my chances on the preload. I highly doubt I'll ever be flexing my 4runner too much. I rarely see a gravel road, much less trails/rocks. I have a 87 4runner that I use for those situations, and I can't risk messing up my dd. So, any further input is appreciated, but topout seems to be the way I'm leaning at the moment.
 
Go with a top mount spacer. To damage the coil, you would need to overcompress it for an extended period of time....
 
Just go topout . Why would you be worried about over extension if you don't off road.

Topout is the easiest way to go .
 
I'm new to this game, and I have no idea where the limit would be. I'm not sure what would cause overextension, and I don't really want to push that. With you suggesting the topout, I'm assuming the preload would hurt the ride quality? I'm also still open to just doing a 1 inch topout instead of the 1.5 inch, but I'm not too sure at the moment. If I lift I want it to be the right amount, and IMO 1.5 inches is just perfect. Any more input on this will be greatly apprecaited.
 
I'm new to this game, and I have no idea where the limit would be. I'm not sure what would cause overextension, and I don't really want to push that. You won't w/ a .75" thick spacer (net 1.5" lift). If you went with a 3" total lift and it was all top-space maybe. I did my spacers and while apart I flexed it down. My guess is you'd have to be well in excess of 2" of extra droop and maybe even a full 3" of extra droop before you'd have an issue. With you suggesting the topout, I'm assuming the preload would hurt the ride quality? This is argued back and forth regularly. IMHO, when talking about a spacer of .75" (1.5" total lift) or less it probably doesn't matter much. The top-spacer will ride a bit better in some situations but that because of the extra droop IMHO. When you think about spacers and struts in a 'free state' it seems like there would be a big difference. Once you think about it with the 4500lb 4Runner sitting on it the theoretical advantage of one spacer design over the other all but diminishes, IMHO. Remember, even with a preload spacer the T4R won't be topped out at rest, not even close. The amount of spring compression at rest will be identical. I'm also still open to just doing a 1 inch topout instead of the 1.5 inch, but I'm not too sure at the moment. If I lift I want it to be the right amount, and IMO 1.5 inches is just perfect. Any more input on this will be greatly apprecaited. If 1.5" is the goal you need a spacer with a thickness of approx. 3/4" of an inch.

That's the issue I'm running into. It has been said that the 3/4 inch topout will be fine. I'm comfortable with that. My concern is will the preload one be "better". If difference in ride will be negligible and it reduces all risk of overextension, it seems it'd be the choice to go with. I've just not spoke with anyone who has ran a 3/4 inch (or anything real close) preload spacer by itself. It is clear that either will work, I'm just still concerned about which is the "best". As mentioned, I'm leaning towards the topout, but I want to make sure I weigh all options first.
