Yeah, as a mechanic & engine builder, your 270hp on 87 octane isn't going to magically produce 300hp going to 93 octane. The higher octane helps prevent detonation, allowing higher compression ratios and more aggressive valve timing... which is where you get your power. You're going to see a negligible improvement in your truck engine.

The original 1GR-FE was designed to run on 91+ octane fuel. At 87 octane, the current engine is rated for 270 hp; at 91+ octane, the engine is rated for 285 hp. When you run lower octane, the ECU retards the timing and when you run higher octane it advances the timing.

Maybe placebo, maybe not... ours seems to run a little smoother and act a bit "peppier" on 89 vs 87. I didn't notice any further benefit when trying 91, so have stuck with running 89.

Try different octanes out. It you notice one seems to make your specific truck happier stick with it. Otherwise you can just go back to 87. Overall cash investment for this experiment is pretty low.

I'd say no, premium fuel is only meant for engines designed for it.npretty sure the 4Runner is designed for standard fuel.
