I'm going in for a Rust Check on Monday where they spray inside the panels and put a thicker product on the undercarriage. It's a real seeping and soaking product designed to get into rust, but nevertheless I wanted to give it its best chance.
So, yesterday I put the Runner up about six inches on bricks and got underneath with wire brushes for about three hours to clear off rust flakes, and with a hose to get all the dirt out. It'll dry for two days before the spray.
I'm amazed how little rust there is for a Nova Scotia truck. It had the traditional rust coating for 8 of the past nine years I guess. The frame is near perfect except for a bit of surface rust around drain holes and welds and on the flat parts on the top near the wheels. The running boards and trailer hitch look like ****, but I'm going to get rid of the boards and get sliders next summer, and take the hitch off and blast it and paint it.
The worst damage is to the gadgets and gear around the spare tire. It's behind the fuel tank, above a spare, and at the least windy part of the vehicle. It's messy, but a new bumper and mount, and a rear door spare arm should keep that area in good shape for the next while--clean it up and don't let it deteriorate again.
Almost no body or floor rust underneath except for around the bottom where the running boards hide it. Gonna have to figure how to sand and repaint the bottom two inches of the body paint without making things look like hell.
