Pressure to replace my V8 4Runner.

I've been researching this a lot since I bought a boat last year (3,050 lbs 2000 X-Star). I have a 3rd gen 2001 limited 4x4 which I love, but find I need more power on highway driving, and more braking power.

The question is should I get a V8 4x4 4th gen 4runner, or go for a Lexus GX470 or 460? The GX ride is super smooth, but I don't like the tall appearance, barn door, and the wheels looking inset and narrow. The 4th gen 4Runner has some perks, but seems to be a worse value than the GX and not as nice looking as the 3rd gen for sure....

Personally I think the GX460 would be the way to go, if you can swing the bill....it’s a freaking sweet ride once you get past the aesthetics. I’ve seen a few get done up with small lifts and different wheels and tires and they look awesome.

Went from a 2004 SE V8 to a 2016 Trail. Had I given it more thought i would have looked for a late model low mileage Lexus GX460.

A couple of thousands at this point is nothing. Just account for how much you've saved in maintenance all these years compared to all the other options.
If you're replacing one cat go ahead and replace both sides, put new DT headers, maybe the Y pipe and a cat-back. You'll end up experiencing you truch in a whole new way and keep it until past 500K.

Someone is going to get a great V8 4Runner when I sell.

You’ll probably be happiest by repairing the 3rd Gen and keeping it.
But, if you drive a lot of highway miles, a new 5th or 6th Gen with KDSS will make your wife very happy.
