Price on 2002

All, my cousin is strongly considering becoming a 3rd gen owner. He has found a 2002 sr5 with 39k miles, asking price 14995.00. PIcs all look great. Hood scoop, millenium silver, gray interior. Any opinions you could share as he is going to monitor this thread would be great. Personally I dont know if i would spend 15k on a low mileage car but he keeps them forever and therefore its a hell of a lot more life he's buying. thanks!!

Well, here's the cousin...

FWIW, KBB on a '03 SR5 w/ same options (V6) retails (dealer) at $18K. The '02 would KBB at just under $14K. Now, I don't have enough knowledge to know if 4Rs sell for more than KBB, but I figure the '02 here could be had for $11.5 - $12K, but it all depends on how the underside looks.

Holy crap, I'm now part of two forums. My wife's gonna cut my nvts off......
 
Last year, I bought a 02 4runner limited 4wd 39k miles for about $15,500. It all depends on where you live and which dealer you go to, but I would say it's a fair price if you are particularly looking for a 3rd gen 4runner. It was a used car but, I do not regret spending that much money on a 3rd gen 4runner with low mileage. My car still runs literally like brand new. It now has about 50K on it. If it's clean, low mileage, no rust, then go take it before someone else does. The hood scoop is hard to come by. The dealers really don't go by KBB. They usually look at the market from dealer only auctions.
In the used car market, there are many cars on which you should not spend your $15,000, but your cousin will not regret spending $15,000 on a "used" 3rd gen 4runner.

Regarding your question on price, here is my $.02 - if you can get that for $12k or so it's a screaming deal. I searched for my truck for quite awhile and spent what most would consider to be too much on it. But I was willing to pay for a low mileage pristine condition 3rd gen, and there aren't many of them to be found. Before deciding I wanted to have the earlier 3rd gen, I was looking at the 2002s sport edition (in the stellar blue pearl color) and found a few nice ones in the $12-15k range. So if that truck you're looking at is in awesome shape and well cared for, it's a really good deal at $12-13k.

One thing to keep in mind though is that you and I are a bit of a rarity when buying a 7-10 year old vehicle. In that range, most folks are looking for good deals and aren't willing to spend top dollar on low mileage, well kept examples. So the pool of buyers who might be willing to pay top dollar for nicer examples is much smaller than all the folks who will tell you a 2002 can be found for $8-10k.

IMO, $15k is about fair for a rig with low miles like that, considering that it has a clean record and that everything is in good shape.

But getting it for $11.5-12k would be a real steal! Either way it would be deal that I personally would go for, if I had the $.

Lou is going to need us to root him on in order to buck up and buy something. i suggest everyone give it to him until he REALLY joins this club.
 
At $15K, I don't think the dealer's gonna have people lined up to buy this thing. Yet with winter coming, they might...:sobbing: I figure I'm two weeks away from being able to get up to PA, so we'll see if fate works in my favor. It usually doesn't, but it took me 9 months to finally buy my Miata, and the guy still had it.....:guitar3:

Besides, it'd be easier if he would just buy a new gen 4R and sell me his...but that doesn't look very promising......:happens:
 
this is correct, and even if i did buy a 5th gen or the next gen GX which is due out in december (more than likely) it will be parked next to my 3rd gen in the garage. I still love you Lou, is that too gay for the forum?

You might be surprised...I just pulled up my old saved searches in Autotrader (which specify 4wd cars under 100k) and there are not many nice low mileage examples out there. None of the 2002s sound as nice as the one you described above.

I don't know why you're hesitating! :)

Dude, there's just no way in hell you're wife would let you keep 2 4Rs....just no way.....:moon: :flamethrwoer2: :flipoff: :biggrin2:
 
Obviously, people are not going to be lined up at the dealer. But there are plenty of people out there who's looking for a clean low mileage 3rd gen 4runner just like your cousin. Go to cars.com or autotrader and see how quickly fairly priced 3rd gen 4runners sell. The dealers are going to find some possible buyers at least within a few weeks.
 
The dealer just called me and offered it at $13.9K. I'm thinking about it, but can't get there right now so it's still up in the air.
 
If the dealer is calling you it is a good sign. Tell him 12.5 and he buys your plane ticket there. Just to feel him out, but sounds like he wants it gone and knows you are a serious buyer. Once a used car sits on the lot for more then 30 days the dealer is loosing money on it.
 
If he buys your ticket you could be home tomorrow with a new car. Chicago is about 6-8 hours from most places in PA. LOL
 
Not sure what I want to do here. I like the 3rd gen but am starting to notice the 4th gen more and more. What are the big differences between the 3rd and 4th gen. 6 cylinders and the suspensions?
