problem with alarm

Hi all. I recently bought a 00 4runner with what I'm pretty sure is a factory alarm. The problem is I dont know how to disable it to remove the battery. Any time I touch the negative cable the alarm goes off. It doesn't matter if the doors are unlocked, the key in ignition, I've tried everything. Any input would be appreciated.

not all toyotas came with alarms, it is a dealer option i belive...


look on the kicker pannel on the driver side by your left foot, is there a switch? if so... flip it.... if not.... too bad i cant help you

That is strange. I have what I believe is a factory alarm. I don't have the switch that shootmine is talking about. I can take out my battery without any problems.

mines a 96, a very strange year because its all alone compared to the 97-99 and 00-02


mine was a dealer option, its the viper alarm that toyota used on the 90's cars

yea no switch. I found the shock sensitivity box and the security module "brain" but there is no switch. Just lots of wires I dont want to mess with since door locks, lights, horn, windows etc are all tied into it. Lame

I just bought a 98 and no transmitter for alarm. One day it went off please i hit the override switch. Sounds like you dont have that BUT disconnect the negitive from battery let alarm cycle through...it should STOP. I then put key into ignitionand turned it to on and reconnected negitive.

Here's what I did:
Find the siren under your hood. It's probably mounted very close to the alarm's brain on the other side of the dash. Snip the wire that leads from the brain to the siren. Disconnect the battery and do whatever you need to do. The alarm will go off (lights will flash and you'll hear clicking sounds), but no siren since you've disabled it. After you reattach the battery, splice the wire back together to the siren.
It's kind of a pain, but it's better than going deaf and annoying the neighbors.

its easier to shove a rag or towel in it, and that will silence it about 90%.
