Problems/Issues with the 2014 4runner

Well they are still unsure. Service writer even said the Toyota engineer that came out was a little skeptical with what exactly was going on. Noticed something the other day when I was in the back with the Toyota tech. The RPM guage does not go down once the vehicle is turned off...it stays at the idle position as if it was still on. Tech seemed pretty confused about this as well haha.

This seems like a possible "lemon" candidate. It really sounds like a one off problem. Not sure I've heard of anything so pervasive, it's certainly not common. This could trigger them being required to just trade you to a new vehicle (Depending on what sort of lemon law Co. has). A new vehicle should not be having this kind of problem at all (and the other 99.9999% don't)

The Dealership I go to here is pretty helpful. They brought up the lemon law point this last time I brought it in. We shall see how the new part works out here in the next few days.

Update on the 4runner electrical disaster as of today. Dealership saying now that the part will not be available until 22 Sep..i'm thinking at this point that Toyota is literally making the part in Japan haha. This will be over 30 days of shop time and is getting ridiculous. It does not help that I am stuck driving a gold camry as a rental. Going in today to check out my options.

Obviously, they are guessing at what might "fix" your problems. Unfortunately, they are also doing what we used to call "shotgun troubleshooting", where they will replace numerous components, hoping that they may "hit" the one that is causing the symptoms (like shooting in the dark with a shotgun, hoping to hit something). If you haven't already grown tired of this merry-go-round that you're on, you soon will unless they get lucky.

Please keep us informed about the progress, especially any further conversations about The Lemon Law.

BTW- we were just driving along the other day and the screen on our upgraded Entune radio just went totally blank. No response to any touching. I pushed the "audio" button and it came back to life. Strange.....

Growing very tired of it. I will keep everyone updated on the status of whats going on. Don't think you want to hear this but my NAV screen did that twice this last time as well!

ducati848: - following with interest. I do hope they resolve your problem, but even more, I hope yours is that one in a million, and that this is not a sign of the way things are going to be for all of us. I believe it is asking for trouble to over-complicate things, and then hand over control to a computer. (PLEASE tell me that our Toyota computers are not running software by Microsoft!)

Not to make light of your situation, but if you want to see just how bad this sort of thing can get, spend some time over at sprinter-source.com. This is a great vehicle that is way over-complicated, and problems such as you describe are quite common. (Slight exaggeration, but it seems if a frog farts in the ditch as you drive past, you will go into "limp home mode")
The techies then use your vehicle as a learning tool, trying to figure out and rectify the problem, on your dollar - sound familiar?

I really hope they find your electrical "Gremlin", and get you back in your Runner! And let us pray this doesn't become a common issue with Toyota's!

Sounds like they have it figured out but a friend of mine, who also owns a 2014 TEP, was having similar issues. What they found was mice/ squirrels had crawled into the engine bay and had chewed through some harnesses. They replaced one harness completely and repaired the others. It's been problem free since.

BTW, He lives in a very rural area and apparently has a mouse problem. He can't keep enough cats around because the owls and coyotes get them.

So Toyota headquarters in California has been contacting me since yesterday. Today they have stated that the part(which is a body control module) will not be here until Oct 9th!!!!!!!!!!!...so much for the Sept 22nd. Needless to say I was pissed. Told them that this is getting crazy and that a lemon law will be filled first thing Monday morning when the case manager returns to work. Colorado lemon law is 30 days shop time( non consecutive) Oct 9th is 55 days shop time. I'm over all this.

Thought I would give everyone an update.

So after Toyota put in the new body control module is still was not working. Somehow after the "highspeed" engineer dude came he found out my rear cigarette lighter was somehow pushing an extra 5-7 volts of power back into the system when something was plugged in. It would make the ECU think the vehicle is till on which therefore would cause the clock to stay on. As well as the RPM not returning to zero and the keyfob not working.

They are still not sure what was up with the christmas tree dashboard. The lights have not come back on and our fingers are crossed. Time shall tell.

It's taken me over six months to decide to write this, I was so upset at the time.

I had driven the 2014 TE Premium for a little under 5,000 miles and had it serviced and checked before I was to move to Mexico.

I was within 20 minutes of the border, going for one last fill up and to call my ex-partner who I was separating from to say one last goodbye. While we were on the phone, the power steering failed.

I then had the rig towed on a flatbed. Took 4 days to diagnose and order the new part. Toyota paid for my hotel.

I had just driven from LA to Northern CA, Big Sur, Yellowstone, Death Valley, etc. I drove the hell out of it. I thought I was ready to move but somehow a freak accident happened, to delay me for some reason?

Was it mind over matter? I'm still not sure.

Not a single problem since, except one due to a mod I installed. The truck is quiet with none of the other problems mentioned. I love it, but I wish this had not happened so early. It's lingering in the back of my mind a bit.

Maybe it your car telling you you should not have broken up with your ex......:fear:

Trying to decipher if first post was just anger speaking, as it seems in the newest update you are still working with them? Are you moving forward with the lemon law and buyback?

Yeah my other post I was pretty pissed off. I didn't move forward with the lemon law and decided to work with the dealership. We took the body control module out of a new TE that had just come off the delivery truck. My service writer and everybody at the dealership are good people. They couldn't believe how patient I have been throughout this whole process. Love the truck and don't want to get rid of it.

Although if the dash lights all come back on...I think it's time for a swap out with a new TE :D

Yeah, even if you did go lemon law... if you like the truck I would just get a new one. Your experience seems far from normal in terms of overall reliability for the 5th gen 4Runner.

Good to see they are trying to make this right.

2014 LE w/AWD currently at 600+ miles. I've got a rapid ticking noise under slight or hard acceleration and is only heard when silent. If you turn up the radio, you would never notice it. I've driven several other 2014 LE awd's and they do not seem to have this issue. Other then that, it's great! Now, wth is that ticking noise when accelerating!!!!?

haha, wait until winter, it gets louder :)

its inherent to Toyota's engines. if I don't hear it, then I think something is wrong.

same goes for when you start a Toyota engine, is has a unique brash high idle (1000-1500 rpm), then after about 10-20 seconds it turns into a muted high idle. that's a another features that if I don't hear, I get worried also.

well the 12k/12 month warranty is out.

does the 3/36 still cover that on a used 2nd owner?

if you have a cpo certificate they will cover it no problem.
