Problems with the 3rd Generation 4Runner?

I'm just starting to ponder trading in my rsx-s for a 4Runner (2000, 2001 or 2002).

I was wondering if there are any known problems for these years of 4Runners? Anything to look out for?

I'm not sure if I'm going to end up doing this but with the whether we have here in Sask., Canada it is sort of useless having a car like mine.

Any responses would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am a convert from clubrsx as well, sold my type-s for a '99 limited...I use the 4runner way more than I ever used the S...Welcome
 
All three years are the third generation model. 2000 was the last year for the 5 speed stick shift and 2001 got VSC (vehicle skid control) and traction control as the biggest change.

All years mentioned are rock solid. Consumer Reports says it is about 80% better than average. Toyota has been making this model since 1996 and by 2000 they figured out all the problems.
 
I recently traded in a 1999 Limited 2WD for a 2003. My old 4Runner had 95,000 miles and never had a single problem of any kind. The thing was still on its original brake pads. The only reason I traded it in was because I wanted the safety features of the new ones. I can't recommend 3rd Gen enough.

ive got a 99 with the highlander package, and absolutly love it, i have 120K miles, and not a single problem, this thing will climb a tree, lol, i think the 4runners are the best all around SUV just my .02

well, the noticable thing is the hoodscoop, has rear seat air (just heat) and the BEST thing is the locking rear diff. im sure some one will chime in and give the specs. hope that gives you an idea...

A positive note is the 3.4 V6 is a non-interference engine, so IF the timing goes, no internal damage. However, don't disregard the 80-100k timing belt replacement.
 
Also, if you change the diff oil and use synthetic, it will most likely make the rear axle seals leak. Assuming the seals are factory. This goes for 3rd gens. Not sure about other years.

Hey, I'm not sure where you dug this thread up from, but it's from 2003... I'm sure he's replaced the axle seals a couple times since then. Lol

What CEL code is it?

Was CEL blinking?

VSC off is a normal limp home mode setting, due to CEL.

Find out the CEL and ye shall know the truth!

Where did I read that? hmmmm
