Is there anyway you to mount your spare on the stock rack on your roof? or do you have to buy a basket?

I have seen the old tire in a basket on the roof deal. I have also seen that same combo snap the cheap plastic parts of the cross bars. I have also helped wire the rack together so we could continue our trip. He now has 4 or 5 cross bars to help prevent the same from happening again.
