Procedure on Checking trans fluid with dipstick

I know some vehicles need to running, put into each gear etc..

What do we have to do with our 4Rs. It's an 03 V6 Sport..

Any helpful info is greatly appreciated!!

wow...didn't realize the owner's manual has no info on that until I read it.

Doesn't even show the location of the dipstick...you do have a dip stick on your 4R?

Sorry, I have a 05 V8 5sp...no stick.

But here are two procedure from two different vehicles...one had a AW4 (aisin - toyota) transmission 4sp.

2000 Jeep Cherokee:
- drive vehicle to reach operating temperature
- park on level ground and raise hood...set parking brake
- place transmission in Drive - reverse - drive -reverse and then to park (leave engine idling)
- remove dipstick...wipe clean...replace and then take reading...might want to repeat to confirm levels.

2006 Honda CRV:
- same as above except do not leave engine idling when check fluid level. If you ever saw the engine bay of a CRV, you would understand.

main thing is to just have the transmission fluid at operating temps then take the reading.

you can take a reading of the dip stick when the fluid is cold for a personal indication you can say if the transmission fluid level is at this mark when its cold then i know its ok when its warm..

all in all its just a matter of the fact that transmission fluid expands when it gets hot, and the recommended fluid levels are a measurement based on the cold quarts added it takes to read proper levels at warm temp.

also just an FYI.. it should be a vivid red color and not look or smell burnt. if it looks or smells burnt and doesnt look like new tranny fluid a fluid flush is a nice present for your 4runner lol

Yeah I just had the dealer do a flush in the last month. I installed a transmission cooler yesterday and lost some fluid due to a bad hose connector. Thanx for info jwysherk and aha2988!!
