Programming 04 4runner keyless remote

Hola,

I replaced one of my keys and keyless remotes this morning (I have an 04 limited 4runner) and they wanted to charge me $95.00 to program my remote. Does anyone know how this can be done? He said it would take 5 minutes, so I can't imagine it is that difficult.

It's really easy, I might even be able to dig up the instructions from when I did it, but I'm sure it is Googlable. It's mostly "turn the ignition to Acc and back two times in 5 seconds, open the door, close the door..." etc. If someone wants to charge you $95 they are either a dealer or an A-hole.
 
1. Start with the key out of the ignition. Open the driver door (all other doors are closed). Driver door is unlocked (other doors don’t matter).


2. Perform these steps within 5 seconds
1. Insert the key into the ignition (don’t turn it) Pull key out
2. Insert the key into the ignition (don’t turn it) Pull key out


3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds
1. Close, then open the drivers door.
2. Close, then open the drivers door.
3. Insert the key into the ignition (don’t turn it) and pull it out.


4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds
1. Close, then open the drivers door.
2. Close, then open the drivers door.
3. Insert the key into the ignition and leave in the ignition.
4. Close the drivers door.
Turn the ignition to ON (as far as you can go without cranking the engine), then back to off .
5. Remove the key from the ignition.


5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock automatically indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.


6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds
6a. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the transmitter simultaneously for 1.5 seconds
6b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should lock then unlock once indicating successful programming. If the door locks cycle twice, repeat steps 6a and 6b as the remote was not accepted.


7. Open drivers door
 
For a 2003 SE T4R V8 4WD

I just used R.A.'s instructions and they worked perfectly. None of the instructions that came with my "used" remote worked except for yours.

To make the fob work (lock, unlock, arm, disarm, roll down rear window, shine your shoes, etc.) :cowboy:

Don't remember what the dealer charges to activate a coded key but I have found a local locksmith that does lots of work on cars charging $75 to activate a key.

This process makes the entire remote work? So the window button and panic button will work after this?

I just want to be clear that I wont need to depress any button but lock and unlock to program the entire Fob?
 
extra keyless entry remote?

My plastic casing broke where it attaches to my keyring. The "guts" still work. Does anybody happen to have a remote that maybe doesn't work anymore, but the casing is still good? Or any idea where I could find one?
 
I just bought an '04 Sport and it only came with 1 key fob, which didn't work. The previous owner claimed that the batter was just dead, but after I installed a new one, it still didn't work. I tried these instructions to program it (thanks! btw) and the truck didn't even recognize that I was pushing buttons on the remote. So, I bought a used remote on ebay. It looks identical to the one that came with the truck (has the back window roll-down button and so forth), but when I try to program it, the locks always cycle twice indicating rejection. The ebay auction claimed that it would work for an '04 T4R and given that it looks identical to the one that the previous owner gave me I would suspect it is the right one. I get into the programming mode successfully (locks cycle once at the end of the sequence), but can't seem to get it to accept the new remote.

Any ideas? How sensitive to timing is it during the steps where you have to hold the lock and unlock buttons, then press lock? I think I was doing it fairly well, but not sure on exact timings. The truck would reject the new remote as soon as I pressed the lock button (step 6b). There was almost 0 delay.

Figured it out. The timing is actually pretty sensitive on holding the lock and unlock buttons in step 6a. The instructions say 1.5 sec, but it seems like that is the max. When I finally got it to work, I only held it for maybe 1 second. Every previous time I had probably held it at least 2 seconds. Just thought I would update this in case someone runs into the same issue.

Brings me back to the days of Nintendo...we should be able to cheat or have more power with this ya?
