Anyone here with a '96 Limited and RS3000 removed? Can't get this to work, tried key in lock/helping door latch up+down/power lock button and also no horn beep with lock/unlock cycle either.

All locks work with strong lock/unlock cycle.

When operating the key in the door ..holding a few moments to left locks all doors while holding to the right opens when all. Is this a trait of the keyless entry?

Hi All - thanks so much for this thread! I just got mine to work.
I just bought a 2002 Toyota 4runner SR5, and it only came with one steel key, not fob. It has the alarm system with the red dot to the left of the steering wheel.

I brought it to the dealer and had three new keys cut from the VIN, they all worked in the doors, hatch, but not in the glove box. They were not chipped keys.

I bought these aftermarket key fobs from Amazon:

I followed the programming instructions posted above and here:

As mentioned above, I needed to use my hand to "help" the driver's side unlock. I also had to turn the key in the ignition 5 times at 4C. After the locks locked and unlocked a few times on their own, I then repeated the process, turning the key to ON and back off 2 times. Programmed two fobs and they work from at least 30 feet.

Loving this forum since buying my T4R and specifically this thread, however I'm having some trouble getting the fobs I purchased programmed to my vehicle and looking to see if anyone can provide me any guidance or help.

Mine is a 2000 SR5, my local dealer has confirmed that the FCC ID for my VIN is HYQ12BBX. When I bought this vehicle it just came with one physical key and no fobs. I've now purchased 2 different sets of fobs and have been able to partially program 1 and unable to program the other.

The first fob I purchased from Amazon is (Amazon.com: VOFONO Perfect Car Key Fob Replacement Keyless Remote Fit for Toyota 4Runner 1999-2009/Sequoia 2001-2008 FCC ID：HYQ12BAN HYQ12BBX HYQ1512Y (Pack of 2): Home Audio & Theater). I've been able to get this fob programed, but still have the following issues with it. When I program it, only the lock an unlock buttons work, the rear window button does not. Also, once programed the fob will work fine until I actually drive the car. Once I drive somewhere, stop and turn the car off, the fob will no longer work. However, I figured out if I take the battery out and put it back in, the fob will start to work again, but will do the same thing the next time I actually drive the car somewhere. I haven't seen anyone else report having this issue. I tried replacing the batteries, but still get the same issue.

Because of this issue, I decided to purchase another fob from eBay (2 For Toyota 4Runner 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 Remote Keyless Entry Key Fob | eBay). With this fob, I've tried to program it probably 25+ times and every single time, upon doing the last step (Press and hold both lock and unlock, then lock for 2 seconds) the locks cycle twice to indicate that the fob is not accepted.

I've tried replacing batteries as I mentioned above. I've successfully done the 5 on/off key in ignition cycle to erase all previous connections many times and followed with multiple successful 1 on/off key ignition cycles and 2 on/off key ignition cycles, but just can't see to get the first fob to program correctly or the second fob to program at all. I can get the vehicle into programming mode almost every single time I try, so that isn't at all my issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me to try? Should I maybe try another specific fob that others have had good success with and return the ones I've purchased? I'm thinking of trying this one (Amazon.com: KeylessOption Keyless Entry Remote Control Car Key Fob Replacement for HYQ12BAN, HYQ12BBX, HYQ1512Y (Pack of 2): Automotive) maybe since someone recently posted about it working on their 2000 SR5. I'm determined to have keyless entry on my 4Runner and will greatly appreciate any help or advice!

There are a lot of stories like yours in the forums, enough to convince me that OEM was the only way to go (back when I was searching on this issue in 2019) so I bought 3 used fobs. It's not the Housing that matters, but the electronics inside (though I seem to remember something about one of the chineseium housings causing problems, don't recall exactly what that was though).

I've had precisely Zero issues with my 3 used OEM fobs once I managed to get them programmed (door actuator issues). Certainly don't have to pull the batteries. Not the "easy" solution, especially while hunting down examples that aren't destroyed (though the housings can be swapped, it's the electronics that's important).

Hope that 1 key you have is a "master" so you can easily make other keys.... nightmare situation if it's not.

Do you have the RSxxx series ECU under the seat or dash?
Just wondering if you need the RSxxx series ECU to do this? My RS3000 series ECU was removed by the previous owner. He had a receipt from the dealer which indicated they removed due to issues.

Thanks for the suggestion to go with OEM. I purchased an OEM fob of off eBay and got it programmed on the first try with no issues. The button for the rear window is is even working perfectly!

Sorry to bump an old thread but I can’t start a new thread. I’m trying to program my key fob but I have 1998 Limited so the unlock and locking method doesn’t work.

I tried to push the green button on the box under the seat but it ended breaking and getting pushed inside the box. I now have no way to program my key fob.

Could I unplug the ECU and program it the traditional way?

Can anyone help or am I out of luck?

I'd would take out the front seat bolts and loosen the rears. That way you can lift the seat back and have a closer look at your module. You might be able to fix the button.

The buttons gone when I was pushing it was not clicking so I tried to push a bit harder and the button got pushed all the way in. You can stick a small screwdriver in the hole, it goes basically all the way in with no resistance and when I do, the doors locks cycle which is odd.

programming mode can be pretty finicky, but keep trying

I tried to get my '99 into programming mode about 10 times, and had almost decided something was broken, when it finally worked. It was such a surprise that I forgot which keys on the remote to press and had to start over, ...and... then I was never able to do it again, lol.

Luckily I noticed that if I pressed the remote a bunch of times it would actually operate the locks, so realized all I really needed was a fresh fob battery.

Working good now (but I think I over-stressed my door lock actuator in the process).

TL; DR: don't give up on programming mode. it will probably eventually work with the right speed and cadence.

Just bought a 98 Limited that didn't come with a fob... Read on this thread to look at the box under the seat to get the FCC ID, but the only box under my seat is an amp.

It does not have the alarm LED on the left side of the dash that my 2000 SR5 had.

What are my options? Keyless entry is a must...

My '99 is the same as yours (no box under the seat and no alarm light on the left side of the dash). What worked for me was ordering a fob from here, FCC ID: HYQ12BBX (that part is important since there are a few different remotes that look the same with different FCC ids). Then I followed the programming instructions in this thread, but I had to help the door locks up and down by pulling up when I unlocked and pushing down when I locked. The old motors get really slow really quickly when you lock and unlock in rapid sequence.

The remote you need is most likely the same one I got, but you can always use a vin lookup website (I like this one) or call a local dealer's parts department to confirm. Just don't believe them when they tell you they need to program it for you.

I searched my VIN on the toyodiy site, but couldn't find anything regarding FCC ID, any idea what I'm looking for?

Edit: I've searched some other VIN decoder sites, not finding anything about remote keyless or FCC ID...

Just be careful of the counterfeit ones on ebay and Amazon. Lots of good and bad sellers on those platforms..

That's the problem, I couldn't find a part# for the fob or anything that suggested FCC ID... I'm beginning to think that it didn't come with one. Might have to go aftermarket.
