Programming Instructions for keyless entry remote?

1998 key fob

I tried ordering a fob from ebay...
it was like the oem but unfortunately I could not program it after many tries.
My original one started to act up, trigger the alarm or not even open/close the doors after a new battery was installed in the fob

Going to the dealer is way to expensive so I will just have to deal with actually using a key to unlock and lock the doors.

I would appreciate any help, thanks.

Vooryjoni, I have been fighting this issue since we bought the 4runner, 3 weeks now. I've done every combination I could find. I've done it 50 times today alone and the locks finally cycled. Couldn't get it to do it again. I watched this guys video off a whim and BAM I did it. Only thing he does different is he pushed the button on the side to simulate the door closing. I could only get one remote programmed but I am happy with that. Watch his video, might help you. It did me... Good Luck!

Thank you. I have seen that video maybe ten times. He claims the programming is for 99-02 (mine is a 98 with the older fob) but he performs the programming in a 4th gen (03-09). Mine works sometimes but is defective. I try not to use it because when it does not work, I have to use the key to get in and then that insanely loud alarm goes crazy (that horn sounds like those old Mercedes from the 80's... LOUD).

Anyway, I will most likely just use the key from now on... thank you for trying to help me
 
Thank you for this useful thread. I ordered 2 key fobs on Amazon as I just bought a 2000 3rd gen and went through the instructions a few times before successfully programming both key fobs. They now work beautifully and the window down and panic buttons also work perfectly.

There's no way to put the windows back up with the key fob, huh?

There's a guy on Youtube that had the easiest steps - instead of counting 5 lock/unlock cycles, count 10 lock unlock lock unlock 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 etc up to 10 then "close" the door by just pressing the little rubber button on the side of the SUV body frame that tells the 4R that it is closed, then do the 10 thing again. Boom!
 
I bought two new remotes off Amazon. Watched the YouTube video and got both my new remotes working on the first try today. Thanks!
 
Find some from Amazon that are Prime (if you're a prime member... and if you aren't.... you're either really smart or really dumb)....

Just went through this last month with the RS3000. First set only 1 worked but, since its Prime, I had them send me a replacement pair at no charge kept the best 2, and then sent the worst 2 back.

Got it to work after using the manual push/pull method! It only worked once but it worked! Unfortunately I think that my lock motors are going back. All of the doors work except the front passenger side. I’m sure this is already a thread..Anybody have a link?

I've tried just about everything and cannot figure this out. I can get my 3rd Gen to enter programming mode(lock/unlock confirmation), but only using the 4th Gen sequence. Meaning I use the open door/close door method. After I successfully enter programming mode and try to program new FOBs, nothing happens. I have about 5 different FOBS and 1 old one that is bad. NO RESPONSE from any FOB. I'm thinking it could be the remote receiver in the hatch. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW- the one old FOB used to work.
 
I too am having a hard time adding a FOB. No guarantee this is your problem, but Camelback told me the ECU can only store metadata on 4 FOBs.

It's my understanding a dealer can zero out the FOB data so new ones can be added. I was quoted a price of $200 to reset the ECU from Camelback so I passed for now since I have one FOB that works.

Some more info. Yes, you can only have 4 fobs currently programmed so make sure the programming instructions you're using are for all-new (not adding another) ~ that will wipe all fob data from memory and start fresh.

That is also how you "zero out" the system... it can't be done with Techstream, at least on my '99. I've been through every possible setting, it's not there. I can do Keys, but not remotes. So, you want to pay the dealer $200 to follow the same instructions you already have, but want to charge you an additional ~$600 to replace a couple door lock actuators in order for the system to work, that's your decision. But they don't have any extra tricks, or additional tools ~ they will do the exact same thing you are.

Thank you for the replies. I have gone through the different "modes". I can do the 5 key turn and get the car to respond with the 5 click "prohibition" mode which should delete all remotes I believe. Then, I run the add (1 turn) or rewrite (2 turns) and get the appropriate response. When I push the LOCK+UNLOCK combos I still get no response. Not even a "failed add". Is it common for the ECU in the hatch to go bad? It's almost as if the truck is not receiving any signal from remotes. Tempted to buy a used orange ECU to see if it will work.

I've only been around for less than a year, but I've never seen mention outside of crash damaged (totaled liftgate) or obvious water damage (flooded vehicle) which researching my own new remotes.

Are you Certain that you have a Factory system and not the RS3000 dealer-installed system? I don't know of any guarantees that you have one or the other (well, the RS3000 was the only option until 1999, so if you have a 96~98, you have the RS3000 and the control unit is under the seat or under the drivers dash). I suspect that Limiteds after 1998 have a better chance of being the Factory system... but if you're getting into programming mode, I'd expect battery/remote bad if ONE didn't work, and wrong frequency if multiples don't work.

I did see a factory installed system near the ignition lock cylinder. I believe it is a RS3000 but not sure. Mine is a 2000 SR5 4WD. I have the Toyota "VIP" stickers and security light on the dash as well. I have 2 FOBs that I believe to be incorrect aftermarket and 2 that are Toyota exact replacements with the same FCC numbers. All new batteries.

A bit off topic. But does anyone know if there is a fob that replaces the Securikey+ fob? I only have one left and it’s about to desegregate.
