Project 1Ton "build thread" Many Pic's!

I started reading your build again today cause of T4ROTM vote and I saw that....I just couldn`t resist. But looks like you have fun with it and love that build and repair stuff.

Due to many requests and my own personal desire, I started lowering the 4runner. since coilovers are in the works but not financially doable, im going the easy route. Of course I started with the rear end. Pulled the 4" blocks out and ordered new u-bolts. Now im having a hard time deciding on front springs. Im also going to have to change out shocks. So if anyone is interested in some 12" fox 2.0's let me know.

That height looks a lot better, Nate, and will definitely up your trail ability with the lower center of gravity. What's the star on the front fender--I've never noticed that before?

Fantastic build and sweet truck. I'm working my way there just taking my time, however I dont plan to get quite as high up as you, but definatly get on a 37/38" tire. I'm curious about what leaf springs you have. I currently have trail gear springs below my rear axle. My goal is to SAS my front, get leaf springs up there also, and eventually sit much closer to where you are with the springs ontop of my axle. Thanks for the awsome write up - I definatly learnt a few things and can see what I'm in for on my journey.

I'm not sure I'll require the full 12" of the Fox shocks, however if you still have them in three months from now, I'll let you know. Need to get home and take some measurements. If you ever do end up changing over to coils, I would be very interested in your front leaf springs, just curious how much they actually settled in - or if they have yet.

I'd keep those shocks and poke em up through the body hugging as close as possible to the fender well hump in the back. I'll post up some pics you asked me for tomorrow of the rear quarter panels that I cut away. I'm planning on mounting my shocks tomorrow too so I'll post that up as well. Rig looks sweet Nate!

Well I finally got back to working on the 4runner. Just got done pulling the 2nd broken transmission out. Still hunting for a th400 case in my area. Missourians scrap everything metal, so finding cases is hard.

That is some damned impressive carnage. I don't think my four squirrels of fury has enough torque to break a soda straw.

Keep the pics coming!

Man they scrap like crazy here too Nate,I can't even keep some scraps out in the driveway longer than an afternoon before someone stops and asks me if I was planning on throwing it away! God darn Scrappers/Tweekers whatever you want to call em.

NATE they made a steel case th400 i would recommend finding one. ill check my GM guy and see if he has one.

In all my years I have never heard of a steel th400 case. I believe you are thinking of the sm465 which is a cast iron 4spd manual trans.

OK, the axle side has 2 mounting points forward and rear of the axle

Then you have to anchor the 2 mounting points to the frame. Since the axles on a leaf sprung rig dont move straight up and down. You have to give it some room to room forward are rear somewhat. If you hard mount it without using a shackle or some other method, it will either rip the brackets off the axle or the frame.

This video shows it best without having a camera underneath. If you look the axle tries to fold forward but axle doesnt wrap or twist up and down.

ok an old power glide would be cast iron. They never made a th400 cast iron. They made a hydramatic 4 speed from '46-'63 that was cast iron and is definitely not what i need. I just need a th400 core 2wd or 4wd doesnt matter. I know what i need to do to fix this, so third time should be the charm.

Back in the saddle! I finally found a transmission. When I went to pick it up I got an injected 350, and 2 transmissions for $500. Rebuilt the transmission and put it back in last night. Lowered the T-case about 1/2 in. Put a wilwood brake proportioning valve in, and a vacuum reservoir to store more vacuum for the brake booster since the cam barely makes any vacuum. I may have to put a vacuum pump in to get proper vacuum, we'll see.

 and im down again. no... not the transmission this time. but instead a blown head gasket. I got bubbles in the radiator and steam out the valve covers. Ultra FML!

Took it out for a test drive with the new transmission. By the way zero vibration at 70mph. Engine started missing, backfiring, 40% loss of power. I cant even do burn outs right now. I rebuilt the carb thinking it was that, checked timing, everything ignition, 5x check firing order, adjusted valves, re-torqued the intake, checked for vacuum leaks. It's so humid right now you can barely see the steam. So, engine tear down begins in the morning. Stay tuned, pics to follow.

Needless to say the wife isnt very happy...
