Project 1Ton "build thread" Many Pic's!

Don't give up nate, you'll hate yourself for a long time if you do! You have WAY too much time and money into your rig to give up on it.

BUT... IF you do, I got dibs on the axles :flipoff:

Well i have finally had it. After a complete flush and verifying the thermostat and waterpump are working I took it for a test drive. Not only did it still heat up ever so slowly... I smoked the F!#*ing transmission. After i cool off for a couple days im going to pull the pan to see if the filter tube came loose (no movement in any gear). It slipped big time twice under 1/4 throttle before it quit all together. If everything is intact it means torque converter, pump, or valvebody. In which case I am calling it quits and tearing the whole thing down and selling the pieces. Yes I am serious. I have used my rig twice for one day each and this will be the 4th transmission and 2nd engine. NOT F*!&ING WORTH IT. Oh and if things go right at work, the carcass will have det. cord and c4 ran through it. I will video it for everyone's enjoyment but mainly mine.

Ouch!!! I was enjoying the build. Not sure what to say. Is there anyway to salvage the project?

Why not get rid of all the performance goodies and put a stock chevy engine and tranny in it? You have all kinds of power ran to the drive train so it's no surprise that you're torturing your tranny.

Sorry to hear that you're having so many issues with your runner. That has got to be frustrating to no end. You have one heck of a runner and I'm sure I speak for all of us that we would hate to see you ditch an awesome build.

Ack! Don't do it, man, you'll hate yourself for it.

What about getting another truck to enjoy while you take the time to work the bugs out of your baby?

Because I have a 1967 GTO that i need to start working on and I dont like having toyota style lawn ornaments plus it just bugs me when something doesnt work right. I found out that I smoked the forward drum clutch pack. Not sure how or why it happened. The oil pan is full of black clutch material and my $100 of trans fluid is smoked... yay. I am going to fix it eventually but i have to save up for some traveling coming up. Guess you can count me out for Moab. Oh and we are supposed to get about 6" of rain. So yea when it rains it pours apparently.

Switch to another project and get your mind off of the runner for a bit. But do not ditch a bad a$$ project. You have too much time and money invested in it to give up on a frustrating drive train.

Keep us posted on the progress!

That would be my advice as well, Nate--just put it on the backburner for a while, and get your mind off of it. Mine's ticked me off plenty over this past year, so I just let it sit so I didn't do anything I knew I would regret. Sounds like you've got a great project to divert your attention--I love the '67 Goats! Best of luck to ya', buddy!

Well im sitting here on staff duty on a 4 day!... SV should know something about it. I made some phone calls and found a race shop that would build my trans for $750 complete with converter. Just gonna reuse my shafts since they are 300m. Also having a custom triple pass radiator built for a whopping $450. It is a little bit bigger but holds coolant in the radiator 3 times as long to get more cooling time. Since I know I have good flow through the system, im blaming the overheating on the radiator. More power more problems.

So does this mean you're not blaming ME anymore? I was looking into the same solution, having my current radiator made into a double or triple-pass design (they can make any radiator into one with properly placed baffles). I hope it all works out, Nate--that monster needs to be on the trail again, with you at the controls.

I had staff duty last Sunday, thankfully that got me Monday off and made last week a 3 day work week :D

It's good to hear that you're not giving up on your 4runner. You would seriously kick yourself in the arse for giving up!

Your motor is healthy and your previous bad trannies were due to another issue not related to the motor but more related to the tranny mount. It sounds like you have the mount taken care of now you need a tranny that will deal with the power of your motor. How much power is that thing putting out? 500hp?

I did

OK well i decided to do an experiment to see how cheap the outcome could be with my overheating issue. Currently I was running a high flow 160* thermostat and it would constantly climb ever so slowly until I had to shut it down. On the old engine I was running a high flow 180* thermostat and never had a problem. The only thing that changed is the bore size and cam, everything else is pretty much the same. I decided to go and get a high flow 195* thermostat and dropped it in. Now I stay right around 210 idling. My problem was i wasnt keeping coolant in the radiator long enough. A 160* would work if I had more fan and or a bigger radiator.

Transmission will be done early next week. I lost a teflon seal on the rear of the pump. That seal's sole purpose in life is to provide pressure to the forward clutches. It went and so did the pressure, clutches instantly fried due to 500hp. I had a race trans shop do it this time to get all the specs just right and to add clutches to the packs. I can rebuild them, but $750 with a new converter, I was ok with that.

Oh and since i dont have to spend $450 on a new radiator, might as well start a rear bumper for my new badass tire carrier.
