Project Part Out

Well, I recently bought another 3rd gen with all intentions of parting it out. After fooling with it some and letting it sit around a little, I finally decided it was worth putting a few bucks in and rebuilding it. I bought it off a younger guy and his dad for $300, cranked it right up and drove it onto a trailer and hauled it home. I'll end up having probably around $1250 in it when I'm done. Not to bad even though it is a 4 cyl., auto, 2 wheel drive. It will be a nice knock around 4runner or daily driver for someone. Anyway, here are some pictures.....

Tore it all down to check it out a little deeper and didn't see any frame damage or anything so time to order some parts.

And now I am to this point. Body work done (hood is as straight as it's going to get considering I am not a body man) and sanded down ready for some paint. Going to have to wait on some warmer temps or try to heat up my shop in order to paint, so I'm kinda at a stand still right now. It will be ready before to long though.



 
this reminds me of my cousin... he sold his truck (68 chevy) for 4k, guy ruined it and sold it back to my cousin for 1500... he already fixed it (roughly 600 in parts) and is now selling it back to the guy for another 4k... lol

I told him not to... lol.

Keep up on my build thread I'm SAS ing a 3rd gen using a solid Toyota front axle. Flipped, stretched and locked to drivers drop. On the cheap!
 
Well, it was pretty warm here on Friday afternoon so I was able to get some base/ clear sprayed on some body parts. Getting a little closer to having it on the road. I have never painted base/ clear so it was a learning experience. I don't think it turned out to bad considering I'm a rookie painter with a far from perfect place to paint.

Bottom side of hood only got a couple coats of color to cover the white some





 
Checked on my freshly painted body parts Saturday morning before heading out with a buddy of mine to go pick up another project 4runner. It's a 99 Limited 4x4 with a little over 200,000 miles. It actually looked better in person than in the pictures. Pretty dang clean 4runner. It is going to make a nice one. I might just have to keep it. It has a transmission issue. It will pull when you first start it but after a minute it quits pulling. Fluid is really dirty and smells horrible. Now to start the search for a transmission.

 
I'll post this question here. When you bought your 96 did the rear doors line up? I'm looking at a 97 it hit a median in the last snowstorm. And has damage similar to yours. The parts it will need is a new front bumper, new driverside fender, new radiator support and some smalls, most of these parts I already have. My issue here though is I believe the frame is bent and I think it's pretty rusted too. But since it was wet I had a hard time finding any serious rust and I couldn't find any soft spots or holes while poking the frame with a screwdriver. The big issue though is the door gaps for both rear doors don't line up(the fronts are fine somehow). The driverside rear door is rubbing on the door jamb and the passenger side rear door has a much bigger gap. It has 244xxx miles engine runs great the transmission shifts great. 4x4 works. It has a newer suspension(kyb struts and shocks, moog springs) Needs brake work. Needs to be cleaned up. Needs a "new" tailgate. Asking $1000. Do you think it's worth it OP or anyone? Pics look similar to ones above

It's definitely odd that the rear doors are off that bad. Sounds like there may be some frame damage somewhere. I would try to check it out better. $1000 doesn't seem to awful bad since it's a V6 and 4x4. Guess it depends on the overall condition. It helps that you may already have alot of the parts you need to fix it. But the rear doors not lining up would make me want to look more into it first

The owner works at a local Toyota dealership and brought it there to look it over and they said everything checks out and the frame isnt bent but I'm not one to trust dealers and there was no paperwork. If I get it I'll have to bring it to my buddies shop and him and I will go through it and if the frame isn't bent I'll fix it but if it is I'll part it out. It also has tundra 17" wheels that look brand new so I'm not worried about making my money back.
