Projector headlight conversion steps

I have an 04 limited 4Runner and want to upgrade to projector headlights w/ HIDs. I bought those ricey aftermarket ones, and although fitment is good, I am disappointed with their performance. The cutoff line is good but each lamp has a major hot spot and everything else is dim. I thought Id give them a shot, but looks like theyre gonna go back on ebay.

Anyways, Id like to next try the 06+ projectors with an HID kit. I have seen some helpful posts on this site before, but for some reason the search isnt returning threads I swear Ive seen. I really should just bookmark stuff that I might want to read later.

So I guess Id just like clarification on what is needed to put in the newer style headlamps with HIDs. Here's what I am piecing together so far:
- 06+ headlamps
- "filler" bezel/trim pieces ($60 + shipping)
- HID kit (xenon depot 4300k, $120)
- Bend down the "squirrel finders"

Is there anything else Im missing? I thought I read somewhere you need new wiring harnesses. If so, could someone explain what this harness would do? Since the HID kit has a harness that pulls power straight from the battery, the stock headlight wires are just being used to power the HID relay right? Also, has anyone found a better deal than $30 each for the trim pieces?

Just retrofit it with real HID projectors.(s2000 or ls430)

I thought about that, but it comes down to a money issue. I dont really need the best lighting in town, just want something slightly better than my halogen/reflector setup. I understand that a retrofit is the true way to go, but it costs a whole lot more and will take a ton more time. For me, the 06+ projectors make the most sense given my time and money budget.

I've read that you can request that your HID kit from Xenon Depot come with the necessary headlight bulb harness to adapt to the H11 headlights. So therefore you won't need a new headlight harness.

I plan on getting a 9006-male-to-H11-female harness adapter from Gary Clark @ Innovative Wiring for $25 + s/h. You just have to specify that in the ordering instructions b/c he doesn't (or didn't) have that type on his site. I wasn't planning on getting HIDs just yet for monetary reasons.

However, you will need a new harness for the turn signals/DRLs. I'm relatively sure the part number is 81125-35440, but don't quote me on it. From what I remember you can use the same harness from a 93 Celica that should work better since it has the correct amount of wires to use.

Try searching Google in this format: <subject for search> site:toyota-4runner.org. I'm pretty sure you'll get better results than the search on this site. Its notorious for dead-ends. Hope all this helps. Good luck.
